WATERTOWN — With a much-sought after win, the Watertown Rapids hope that they’re back in a groove.

Playing in their first home game in a week on Wednesday, the Rapids found a way to end their losing streak, claiming an 8-5 victory against the Syracuse Salt Cats in a New York Collegiate Baseball League game before a crowd of 195 at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.

After falling behind in the early innings, the Rapids (6-10) scored seven runs to take over and end their slide at seven straight games with their first win in nearly two weeks.

Trailing 3-1, Watertown scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings, as Sam Finarelli scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and Scott LaMountain followed with an RBI single in the fifth to tie the game.

The Rapids then struck for four runs in the seventh inning to take the lead for good. Watertown batted around, with Xavier Myles and Damon Asencio each delivering two-run doubles in the frame to build a 7-3 advantage.

Syracuse (10-8-1) responded as Jaxon Grant doubled in two runs in the eighth, but the Rapids got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Nate Figueroa singled and scored on a passed ball.

Tyler Sovie pitched four innings of relief to record the win, yielding two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out two. Sovie, an Ogdensburg Free Academy graduate, picked up his first win of the season.

Cooper Joslin, a Beaver River grad, tossed two innings to post the save, striking out one while allowing one hit.

Earlier, after Syracuse’s Hector Gonzalez scored on an error in the first, Myles singled in a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

In the second, Chase Haglund scored for the Salt Cats as Gonzalez reached on an error.

Grant finished with a pair of doubles and two RBI for Syracuse.

At the plate, LaMountain went 3-for-4 and scored a run, Myles doubled, singled and drove in three runs and Asencio hit two doubles and knocked in a pair of runs.

The Rapids’ scheduled doubleheader at the Rochester Ridgemen on Thursday was rained out. Watertown is slated to return to host Rochester at 6:30 p.m. today at the Fairgrounds.
