CHICAGO — The Cleveland Guardians avoided a three-game sweep by defeating the Chicago White Sox in 10 innings Wednesday, earning a split atop the American League Central after Chicago claimed the first two games of the series at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The White Sox won the opener 6-5 on a walk-off before taking Game 2 by a 2-1 score. Cleveland responded with a 4-3 extra-inning victory in the finale, leaving both clubs tied atop the division.

Game 1: White Sox 6, Guardians 5Monday’s opener featured several momentum swings before Chicago walked it off in the ninth inning.

The White Sox erased an early deficit, taking advantage of a throwing error by Rhys Hoskins that allowed Braden Montgomery to score and give Chicago a 4-3 lead.

Andrew Benintendi added insurance with a two-run single to make it 6-3, but the Guardians rallied to pull within one in the ninth.

With two outs in the bottom of the inning, rookie Sam Antonacci lined a two-run single to right field for the walk-off victory.

Game 2: White Sox 2, Guardians 1

Chicago secured the series Tuesday behind another strong pitching performance.

Miguel Vargas broke a scoreless tie with his 17th home run of the season in the sixth inning, and Braden Montgomery added a sacrifice fly in the seventh for an insurance run.

Parker Messick struck out 10 over 7 2/3 innings for Cleveland, but Sean Burke limited the Guardians to one run over 6 1/3 innings before Sean Newcomb recorded the final seven outs to earn the victory.

Game 3: Guardians 4, White Sox 3 (10 innings)After a rain delay of 2 hours and 40 minutes, the Guardians salvaged the finale in extra innings.

Tanner Bibee continued his success against Chicago, tossing six scoreless innings while allowing three hits to extend his scoreless streak against the White Sox to 15 consecutive innings.

Rookie Kahlil Watson gave Cleveland a 2-0 lead with a bases-loaded single in the sixth before adding the go-ahead RBI single in the 10th to score automatic runner Petey Halpin.

The White Sox forced extra innings after Braden Montgomery and Randal Grichuk hit back-to-back solo home runs with two outs in the ninth, handing Cade Smith his third blown save of the season.

Chicago loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 10th, but Shawn Armstrong escaped the jam by inducing a force out at the plate before retiring Montgomery to end the game.

The Guardians will begin a weekend series at home with the Seattle Mariners.
