The Mets threatened to score a bunch of runs, but they only plated one in a loss to the Diamondbacks tonight in Arizona.
The biggest opportunity of the night came in the third inning, as the Mets had Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen on the ropes. Back-to-back-to-back walks by Gallen forced in a run, but Starling Marte—who hit cleanup in this one—came up empty as he struck out on three pitches with the bases loaded with Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso. And the Mets didn’t score the rest of the way, either.
David Peterson had his worst start of the season, too, as he gave up four runs in six innings of work. All four were earned, but that particular part of his line seems subject to change. Arizona scored their first run shortly after Mark Vientos butchered a hard ground ball off the bat of Randal Grichuk. Officially, it was a double, but it easily could have been ruled an error.
The Diamondbacks went on to score twice in that inning, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. took Peterson deep for a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. José Buttó gave up one run—an unearned one—in two innings of work.
And on top of the loss itself, the Mets saw Brandon Nimmo suffer a knee injury during the game. He remained on the field and completed the game, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him miss some time depending on the severity of the injury when he wakes up tomorrow.
Kodai Senga will try to lead the way and get the Mets their first series win in the past four as these two teams close things out tomorrow starting at 3:40 PM EDT.
