For the second straight game, the Indianapolis Indians staged a late comeback to beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.
Held to one run and two hits in the first six innings, Indianapolis scored five runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh inning Sunday to defeat the RailRiders, 6-5, and gain a split of the six-game series at Victory Field in Indiana.
Carlos Lagrange, the New York Yankees’ No. 4 prospect who is transitioning from a starting pitcher to a reliever, came on in the seventh with the RailRiders leading, 4-1. Dominic Fletcher greeted him with a single. One out later, Keiner Delgado walked and Ronny Simon singled to score Fletcher. With two outs, Jhostynxon Garcia walked to load the bases. Rafael Flores Jr. then hit a high fly ball to shallow right field. RailRiders right fielder Yanquiel Fernandez appeared to lose the ball in the sky and it dropped in between him and second baseman Marco Luciano, allowing all three runs to score and give the Indians a 5-4 lead. After Jesus Castillo singled, Bradley Hanner replaced Lagrange. Nick Cimillo jumped on the first pitch for a single to score Flores and cap the inning.
Ernesto Martinez Jr. homered leading off the top of the ninth to pull the RailRiders within 6-5. It was his 14th home run of the season, establishing a career high.
However, Indianapolis reliever Cam Sanders struck out the next three batters to squash any further RailRiders comeback hopes.
Martinez, Luciano, Abraham Gutierrez and Owen Cobb each had two hits for the RailRiders (3-3, 40-40).
Both teams scored in the third inning. Jonathan Ornelas had a two-out RBI single in the top-half of the inning. Delgado had a run-scoring fielder’s choice in the bottom-half.
In the top of the fourth, the RailRiders reclaimed the lead. Gutierrez singled and Cobb doubled to put runners at second and third. One out later, Fernandez walked to load the bases. Garrett Martin had a run-scoring forceout and Tyler Hardman followed with a RBI single to make it 3-1.
Ornelas led off the top of the fifth getting hit by a pitch. He advanced to third on a hit-and-run single by Cole Gabrielson and scored on a single by Gutierrez for a 4-1 RailRiders advantage.
On Tuesday at 7:05 p.m., the RailRiders return to PNC Field to begin a six-game series against the Norfolk Tides.
Indianapolis 4, RailRiders 3: At Indianapolis on Saturday night, a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth spoiled a two-homer game by Luciano and enabled the Indians to defeat the RailRiders.
Luciano hit the game’s second pitch out to left field for his first home run. He then hit a two-run blast in the top of the eighth to put the RailRiders in front, 3-1.
But with one out in the bottom of the ninth, two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Indianapolis. Shawn Ross hit a two-run single to tie the game at 3 and chase reliever Eric Reyzelman. Dylan Coleman came on and Dominic Fletcher singled to reload the bases. Termarr Johnson then walked to force home the winning run.
