PITCHER

Jacob deGrom, Texas Rangers at Cleveland Guardians ($10,000) — It’s been more than a minute since deGrom was throwing 99-mph gas while posting a 45% strikeout rate and 1.24 FIP. So ridiculous. Injuries and time have depleted some of the skills and production, but at age 38, deGrom is still putting up impressive numbers. The fastball is averaging 97.3 mph, the FIP is 3.59 and the K-BB% is 24.2%. He’s put up at least 20 FPTS seven times with two of those over 30 FPTS. Now he faces a Cleveland team that is 29th in ISO, 27th in wOBA and is without their best hitter in Jose Ramirez.

Value

Robert Gasser, Milwaukee Brewers vs. Cincinnati Reds ($6,700) — Gasser wasn’t great in three of the first four starts of the season. He finished with single-digit FPTS in all three contests and got tagged for four home runs against the Athletics. Since then, he’s been very good, going 5.2 and 6.0 innings while producing over 20 FPTS in both starts. The average exit velocity allowed is only 86.3 mph with a 6% barrel rate. Against left-handed pitching, Cincinnati is eighth in strikeouts. There is risk because the Reds are seventh in wRC+ and second in ISO, but this game isn’t at Great American Ball Park and Gasser has done a good job limiting hard contact, outside of that one game in Sacramento’s launching pad.

INFIELD

Willson Contreras, Boston Red Sox vs. Washington Nationals ($5,100) — Contreras is slashing .281/.377/.527 with a .246 ISO. He has 17 home runs, 39 runs, 50 RBI and a stolen base in 329 plate appearances. The average exit velocity is 90.2 mph with a 13.5% barrel rate and 76.6 mph bat speed. Against right-handed pitching, the wRC+ is 140 with a .230 ISO. 12 of the 17 home runs hit have come off a righty. Miles Mikolas has a 5.47 FIP and 9.9% K-BB% against righties. Eight of the 16 home runs allowed have come off the bat of a righty.

Value

Anthony Seigler, Boston Red Sox vs. Washington Nationals ($2,300) — Yup, we’re stacking against Mikolas and the Nationals bullpen, which has the third-highest FIP in MLB. Seigler bats toward the bottom of the order, has a 0% barrel rate and 67.9 mph bat speed. In addition, the BABIP is .409. That said, the walk rate is 9.1%, strikeout rate is 21.2% and the ISO is .200. Plus, it’s only been 33 plate appearances. Over the last five games, he’s put up at least 5 FPTS in all with three of those in the double-digits. He’s on a little heater, is priced close to the minimum and the matchup is a good one.

OUTFIELD

Heriberto Hernandez, Miami Marlins at Colorado Rockies ($4,300) — Hernandez is batting only .222 but he has eight home runs, 17 runs, 29 RBI and five stolen bases in 180 plate appearances. The BABIP is only .250 while the ISO is .179. The average exit velocity is 91.7 mph and the bat speed is 74.5 mph. Against left-handed pitching, the ISO is .230 and four of the eight home runs hit have come against a lefty. Now he faces Sean Sullivan in Coors Field. Sullivan has a 5.77 FIP and -2.3% K-BB% against righties.

Value

Wade Meckler, Los Angeles Angels at Seattle Mariners ($3,200) — Meckler has mostly been slotted third or fifth in the batting order. He has two home runs, 14 runs, 15 RBI and two stolen bases in 109 plate appearances. The average exit velocity is only 86.3 mph with a 6.9% barrel rate and 68.8 mph bat speed, but he has put up double-digit FPTS in six games with three of those over 20 and a high of 30 FPTS. George Kirby has been solid, but the FIP is 3.90 with a 10.2% K-BB% against lefties.
