CHEYENNE – The Cheyenne Sixers answered Timnath, Colorado’s rally for a 7-3 victory to close the Five Tool Colorado Legends Classic on Sunday in Parker, Colorado.
Cheyenne use three two-out walks to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Quentin King – who drew the first walk after a pair of groundouts – scored on an error.
Timnath knotted the score 1-1 in the third before a Kyler Hauf double gave the Sixers’ a 3-1 lead in the fourth.
Mason Maggard tripled to lead off the fifth, and scored on Kayden Tafoya’s one-out double to right to put Cheyenne up 4-1.
Timnath cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth before Cheyenne pushed three runs across in the sixth. Brodin Robbins brought Colin Crecelius home with a sacrifice bunt before Braden Pearson hit a triple to score Hauf for a 6-3 advantage. Pearson scored on a Tafoya double for a 7-3 lead.
Tyler Cassat picked up the win by tossing 1⅔ innings of one-hit relief. Pearson got the save by striking out two batters in the sixth and final inning.
The Sixers (36-10-1) host Douglas for a South Conference doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Scottsbluff tops Hawks in Tri-State semis
CHEYENNE – An eight-run first inning helped Scottsbluff, Nebraska, pick up a 12-2 victory over the Cheyenne Hawks on the semifinals of the Tri-State tournament Sunday at Powers Field in Cheyenne.
The Zephyrs added four runs in the third to end the game in the fourth inning due to the tournament’s 10-run mercy rule.
Troy Nelson went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI. Kace Hansen had the Hawks’ only other hit.
Cheyenne (30-10) plays a South Conference doubleheader at Torrington starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
