PHOENIX — Once Matt Chapman exited Tuesday night’s game with an abdominal strain, it was fairly apparent that the San Francisco Giants would need to put him on the IL, especially with shortstop Willy Adames already out with back spasms.
The team made that move before Wednesday’s finale at Chase Field, recalling infielder Christian Koss, who was in the lineup at shortstop, with Casey Schmitt back at third base, his best position.
Manager Tony Vitello said the MRI showed a mild strain and he expects Chapman will return before the All-Star break, which begins July 13. Chapman and his wife, Taylor, are expecting their second child in the next week, so Chapman has returned to San Francisco — he’s limited to rest now, anyway, and the due date is Sunday.
“That’s got to be a huge stressor even when you take out any injuries or any strains that are going on,” Vitello said, “so knock out two things, one negative, one massively positive, in the next week or so and then be ready to rock and roll before the All-Star break.”
Adames, out since leaving Sunday’s game with back spasms, did extensive baseball activity Wednesday and is still expected to be ready for Friday’s game at Colorado. Jonah Cox was the emergency infielder again Wednesday night after making his first-ever big-league appearance there Tuesday after Chapman exited.
Outfield alignment: Drew Gilbert, typically in center against right-handed starters, was on the bench Wednesday and it appears as if he’ll be mostly a bench option now that Heliot Ramos is back in the outfield, with Jung Hoo Lee playing some center and right and Ramos and Victor Bericoto available on the corners.
“It’s a little bit based off where we thought Heliot would get the most time, in right field,” Vitello said. “I know he feels really comfortable out there. … We did it this way the other day so we figured we’d stay consistent with that. I think with the things that are going on with guys, Schmitty in particular, all of a sudden we’ve got a deal where both (Ramos and Bericoto) are probably going to need to be flexible and bouncing back and forth.”
When Chapman returns and Schmitt is available to return to the outfield, or when center fielder Harrison Bader (hamstring) returns, things could change, but the Giants like the opportunity to give Bericoto, a rookie, some runway with playing time right now. Lee’s best spot is probably right field, too, making the daily outfield configuration quite the puzzle and something to keep an eye on.
Briefly: After walking six in 2⅔ innings Tuesday, Landen Roupp said his tempo was off and affecting his mechanics; a longer look, he said Wednesday, showed he’s over-rotating, something he also dealt with a bit last year. “It’s just causing my arm to lag, which is why I’m missing arm-side,” he said. “It’s not a terrible hard fix, I just have to fix it.”… Giants prospects Gavin Kilen, the shortstop who was last year’s first-round pick, and outfielder Dakota Jordan were selected for the NL Futures Game roster.
