There have been plenty of memorable bench-clearing incidents for the Boston Red Sox over the years. Willson Contreras added another to the list on Tuesday.

After Washington Nationals starter Cade Cavalli struck him out looking in the fourth inning, Contreras took exception to Cavalli yelling at him, “Sit down, boy.” They continued to jaw back and forth, then Contreras charged at Cavalli to spark Fight Night at Fenway Park:

While entertaining, Tuesday’s dust-up doesn’t sniff the top 10 most memorable Red Sox brawls of all time. Check out our rankings below:

Honorable mention – Mo Vaughn vs. George Bell: September 6, 1993

George Bell charged the mound after Aaron Sele threw at him. Bell threw a punch that missed before first baseman Mo Vaughn speared him to the ground in what made for an iconic clip.

10. Red Sox vs. Orioles: July 28, 2002

Gary Matthews Jr. didn’t take kindly to Derek Lowe plunking him on the backside in retaliation for Manny Ramirez getting hit by a pitch the previous inning. Matthews exchanged words with Lowe before taking his base, then continued to yell at the Red Sox pitcher. Tensions boiled over, resulting in an entertaining brawl involving several players.

Matthews, Doug Mirabelli, Jason Varitek, and Ugeth Urbina were among the many involved in the fracas.

9. David Ortiz vs. Kevin Gregg: July 8, 2011

Red Sox legend David Ortiz lost his cool after Orioles pitcher Kevin Gregg threw inside on him one too many times. The two exchanged words, then resumed play with a 3-0 count. After Ortiz popped up the next pitch to center field, Gregg said something he didn’t like, prompting him to charge the mound.

Had Ortiz actually landed his haymaker, this one would rank higher on our list. Still, it’s memorable simply because Big Papi is the star.

8. Kevin Youkilis vs. Rick Porcello: August 11, 2009

Kevin Youkilis is the Red Sox’ all-time leader in hit-by-pitches. He finally reached his breaking point on Aug. 11, 2009, when he was plunked by 20-year-old Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello.

Youkilis charged the mound and tossed his helmet at Porcello, who held his own in the fight and took down the veteran first baseman. Porcello drilling Youk was believed to be retaliation for Red Sox pitchers hitting Tigers great Miguel Cabrera with pitches the previous two days.

7. Coco Crisp vs. James Shields: June 5, 2008

Rays starter James Shields drilled Coco Crisp in retaliation for Crisp’s hard slide into second base the previous night. Crisp charged the mound, where his miraculous dodge of Shields’ haymaker was the highlight of the fight.

6. Izzy Alcantara vs. Jeremy Salazar: July 3, 2001

It isn’t the Boston Red Sox, but we couldn’t exclude the unforgettable Izzy Alcantara kick. With Triple-A Pawtucket, Alcantara charged the mound after being hit by a pitch, but not before kicking Scranton Wilkes/Barre Red Barons catcher Jeremy Salazar. It’s one of the most memorable mound charges in baseball history, not just Red Sox.

5. Pedro Martinez vs. Gerald Williams: August 29, 2000

This was a wild game between the Red Sox and Devil Rays. The fireworks started right away as Gerald Williams, the Devil Rays’ first hitter of the game, charged Pedro Martinez for hitting him on the wrist with a pitch.

Williams was among eight Devil Rays players ejected during the game. Meanwhile, Martinez retired the next 24 batters he faced in order. He took a no-hitter into the ninth inning and finished off a complete-game shutout with 13 strikeouts.

4. Carlton Fisk vs. Lou Piniella: May 20, 1976

This brawl broke out after Lou Piniella ran over Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk at the plate. Fisk took exception and threw punches at Piniella, sparking an all-out brawl at Yankee Stadium.

Just when the fight seemed to be dying down, Red Sox starting pitcher Bill “Spaceman” Lee got into a scuffle with Mickey Rivers and Graig Nettles. Nettles body-slammed Lee, resulting in a separated left shoulder.

3. Joe Kelly vs. Tyler Austin: April 11, 2018

The benches cleared earlier in the game after Tyler Austin spiked Brock Holt on a questionable slide at second base. When Austin stepped to the plate for his next at-bat, he was plunked by a 98 mph Joe Kelly fastball.

Austin smashed his bat on the ground before charging Kelly, who got some good shots in before the two sides were separated.

2. Pedro Martinez vs. the Yankees: October 11, 2003

This one was messy.

It all started when Pedro Martinez threw at Karim Garcia’s head. When Jorge Posada yelled at him from the dugout, Martinez pointed at his own head as if to say, “You’re next.”

Later, Manny Ramirez took exception to a Roger Clemens pitch that wasn’t really even close to his head. Nonetheless, benches cleared, and it was on at Fenway Park.

The attention was quickly shifted back to Martinez, who reacted to a 72-year-old Don Zimmer charging at him by throwing him to the ground. Innings after that shocking moment, a Red Sox groundskeeper got into a fight with Garcia and Yankees pitcher Jeff Nelson in New York’s bullpen. This game marked the pinnacle of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry.

1. Jason Varitek vs. Alex Rodriguez: July 24, 2004

The clear number one. The image of Jason Varitek’s glove in Alex Rodriguez’s face has become one of the most iconic photos in Boston sports history.

A-Rod had words for Red Sox pitcher Bronson Arroyo after getting hit by a pitch. Varitek intervened, the two said some not-so-nice words to one another, and then it was on. There was also a side skirmish featuring the Yankees’ starting pitcher Tanyon Sturtze and Gabe Kapler, who got some help from David Ortiz.
