Phillies’ Rob Thomson ‘Regrets’ Poor Decision During Brewers Series Finale originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Philadelphia Phillies ended the month of May and began June with terrible losses to the Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers. For the first time since 2015, the Brewers swept the Phillies in Philadelphia.

Amid the Phillies getting swept, Rob Thomson made a critical managerial mistake in the series finale against the Brewers. Thomson came forward after the series, admitting his mistakes and taking partial blame for the sweep at the hands of the Brewers.

Matt Gelb of The Athletic shared Thomson’s thoughts on his mistakes after the Phillies’ embarrassing series against the Brewers.

“There’s a couple of things that I’m going to look back on over today’s game and question myself over,” said Thomson postgame. “So not only do we have to play better, but I have to manage better.”

Thomson’s self-reflection partially stems from his indecision in the sixth inning of the Phillies’ 5-2 loss to the Brewers. He had a chance to bring Max Kepler to the plate instead of Weston Wilson for the platoon advantage and improved defense.

Wilson wasn’t lifted and subsequently struck out on five pitches. Later in the field, Wilson misplayed a fly ball and began an inning of nightmares for the Phillies, where there were multiple errors committed en route to a blown lead.

While not the sole reason for the loss, Thomson’s decision not to pinch-hit Kepler for Wilson had major ramifications on the game.

After the game, Thomson came forward with clear regret over his decision not to sit Wilson. When asked if Thomson regretted not making the substitution, he said, “Now, looking back on it, yeah.”

The damage is done, and the Phillies were swept to close out what was otherwise a great month of May. In the future, Thomson needs to make firmer decisions, especially when it comes to substitutions late in games.

Despite the four-game losing skid, the Phillies are just one game behind the New York Mets for the National League East division lead. While the losing streak needs to be snapped soon, the Phillies still have time to turn things around.

For Thomson, owning up to his mistakes is the first step towards making the Phillies a better team. Having him learn from his mistakes is a good sign that going forward, he won’t hesitate to make a decision when the opportunity is in front of him. there
