ARLINGTON — If it weren’t for Rangers outfielder Wyatt Langford, his manager would’ve spent the previous two nights stuck in the rubble of a woebegone bullpen more than he already is, regardless of whether that’s fair or unfair to him and the options afforded to him. 

Instead he can exhale, even if only for a moment given that the relief staff puzzle at hand won’t solve itself, and revel in the benefits of stardom.

“Good players make managers look good,” Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said. “That’s just the bottom line.”

They can make potholes look like cracks in a sidewalk, too, when their full potential is on display. Langford played hero for a second consecutive game in a 7-3 win vs. the Houston Astros at Globe Life Field Friday night when he hit a go-ahead home run to wash away an ugly blown lead by his team’s bullpen and extend the team’s hold of the American League West division. The night prior, in a win vs. the Los Angeles Angels, he hit a walk-off single mere frames after his team’s bullpen surrendered a five-run lead in his first game back off of the injured list. 

The trends are twofold, with one that suggests their shorthanded bullpen is unsustainable, and another that suggests their young potential superstar can capably make up the deficits. 

“He hasn’t taken at-bats in two weeks and he’s won us two games,” Schumaker said. “He’s one of the best players in the big leagues in my opinion. We’ve got to keep him on the field as long as we can because he helps us win a ton of games. He has this unique ability to come up in the big moments. His heartbeat is slow and he comes up with big hit after big hit.”

Langford, one inning after the Rangers squandered an advantage, pulled left-handed pitcher Bryan King’s fastball into the second deck for a 404-foot home run that gave his team a one-run lead. It “fired up the boys,” as first baseman Jake Burger, who hit a dagger three-run home run three at-bats later, aptly said. 

It extended a month of electric play from Langford, too, despite the fact that he spent a week-and-a-half of it on the injured list with a hamstring strain. He’s slashed .311/.367/.633 with eight home runs since June 1, and in that span, seemingly single-handedly carried the Rangers to a number of wins. In Friday’s win, before his late-frame heroics, the left fielder started a double play in the top half of the first inning to aid right-handed pitcher Cal Quantrill’s quality start and scored the game’s first run in the bottom half on right fielder Brandon Nimmo’s double.

“It’s the Wyatt we know,” Burger said, “and it’s the Wyatt we need.”

It’s especially necessary with shortstop Corey Seager sidelined, with the rotation down potentially two full-time arms and with the bullpen either shorthanded or overworked dependent on the day. The Rangers held a two-run lead through six innings courtesy of Quantrill’s quality start. He threw a season-high 79 pitches, and because the former long-man is not entirely built up, the Rangers needed to turn to their bullpen in the seventh.

They were without left-handed pitcher Jacob Latz, their All-Star closer, and right-handed pitcher Peyton Gray, their best healthy high-leverage righty, because of workload concerns. Schumaker was left to choose from right-hander Chris Martin (who’s see-sawed between the injured list and dismal performance this season), right-hander Cole Winn (who’d allowed at least one run in six of his last eight appearances), left-handed pitcher Robby Ahlstrom (who’d allowed multiple runs in four of his last six appearances) or right-hander Ben Peoples (a rookie with two big league games under his belt).

He chose Martin, a 40 year old veteran, to start the seventh inning. Martin allowed a bloop single before Astros catcher Yainer Diaz pulled his splitter into the second deck for a two-run home run that tied the game. The Arlington native now has a 8.31 ERA and a .397 batting average allowed this season, and until right-handed pitcher Jakob Junis returns from the injured list, or until the Rangers acquire outside-of-the-organization reinforcements, there are simply few better options to receive high-leverage opportunities. 

It’s an issue that must be addressed. 

Langford has, at the very least, ensured that the Rangers can do so from a victorious position.

“It feels good to help out,” Langford said. “It just happened to be me in those moments.”

It’s not a coincidence that that continues to be the case.
