Breaking news. Crews in Lebanon County put out *** fire at *** restaurant overnight. Emergency dispatchers say it happened at *** restaurant on Horseshoe Pike and Forge Road in South Londonderry township. You can see the smoke rising from the building in this video. They say firefighters got that call just after 1:30 this morning and were on scene for about 3 hours. No injuries were reported, but dispatch did confirm restaurant owners were notified about that fire. Today the state budget could see its first votes. State House lawmakers will be in Harrisburg continuing to work on the budget that’s now *** little over *** past week due. State Senate committees met last night advancing the discussion but not coming to *** conclusion on the final budget bill. That was Senate Appropriations Majority Chairman Scott Martin gaveling in on *** rare Friday session for the committee. Lawmakers pushed forward the capital budget for construction projects, money for state-related universities, and other legislation that could be part. Of *** final budget deal, Democratic Appropriations Chairman Vincent Hughes, however, said it appears *** half *** billion dollars dollar investment for historically underfunded schools may be part of the final budget deal. The investment is proposed by Governor Shapiro and backed by Democrats. If The adequacy number was not agreed to, we wouldn’t be, we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now. I think the adequacy number will be consistent with what the governor proposed. Hughes was not prepared to say whether legalizing, taxing, and regulating skill game machines would be part of the budget. Lawmakers have until October to act after the Supreme Court ruled them as slot machines, essentially making them illegal. Appeal hearings begin next week for property owners reassessments in Lancaster County. The reassessment process is designed to adjust properties to fair market value, ensuring taxes are evenly distributed. The county saw an average increase of about 90%. The Lancaster County Property Assessment Office is offering. Opportunities for property owners who disagree with the evaluation to file an appeal. You may have gotten solicitations from lawyers offering their assistance in these appeals, but you do not need one to appeal your value reassessment. Appeals must be filed within 40 days of receipt of your reassessment notice. The Lancaster County Association of Realtors says the county’s housing market remains competitive with rising prices, strong sales, and improving inventory even as affordability remains *** concern for buyers. Data from June shows that closed sales rose 17% to 570. The median sold price climbed 7% to $385,000 and active listings reached 587. That’s the highest June inventory level in five years. New listings also increased, giving buyers *** few more options, but homes still moved quickly, averaging 20 days on. Market and sellers continued to get above asking price on average. Now *** bipartisan bill aimed at making housing more affordable took effect overnight even though President Donald Trump did not sign it. Washington correspondent Jackie Diffusco joins us from the White House. Jackie, how significant is this new law? Bailey, this has been widely described as the most sweeping federal housing bill in decades, and it took effect just after midnight with little fanfare because President Donald Trump in the end refused to sign it on Friday. The president last month abruptly canceled *** signing ceremony that had been planned on Capitol Hill, and then he decided not to act on the legislation at all ahead of *** midnight deadline. He said that was in protest over stalled voting reforms in the Senate, his bill called the Save America Act. Now he’s also Dismissed that housing legislation as *** yawn even after it won broad bipartisan support on Capitol Hill. This legislation includes dozens of provisions that seeks to streamline federal regulations, speed up home building, and limit corporations from buying up single family homes, and the goal is to address one of the central problems in the housing affordability crisis, which is the fact that there is simply *** shortage of millions of homes. That’s according to Dennis Shea with the Bipartisan Policy Center. No single piece of legislation coming out of Congress is going to solve the housing affordability challenge overnight. We got into this problem over many, many years, and to get out of the problem will require *** significant amount of time. Andy does expect that this new law is going to have *** meaningful impact on increasing supply, on lowering home costs, but he did say that that will likely take years to see. He also stressed though that solving this problem is going to require action from state and local leaders, from the private sector, not just the federal government, Bailey. And Jackie, you see here 79% of voters identified the cost of housing as an extremely or very important issue in *** bipartisan Policy Center poll earlier this year. So what are the politics of the president refusing to sign off on this bill? Well, Democrats Bailey are certainly trying to seize on this moment to make their case that in their view, the president does not care about the affordability struggles that many Americans are facing, of course this ahead of this fall’s midterm elections that will decide control of Congress, where affordability has been *** major issue for both sides of the aisle, and many would argue that the fact that President Trump dismissed this bill will make it. Bit more complicated for Republicans to campaign on what amounts to *** rare bipartisan push in an election year. That said, there are also Republicans who argue that the Save America Act, which is the president’s push to require voter ID to require proof of citizenship in order to vote in federal elections, they argue that is *** major priority for their base too, and that that base. Wants to see the president tugging on every lever and fighting to get that done as well. Although Republican leadership in the Senate has said it simply does not have the votes to get across the finish line. Back to you. Very interesting information. Thank you for your report this morning, Jackie. Well, looking nationally as well, President Trump has fired the leadership of the Election Assistance Commission. The White House notified. Commissioners yesterday, their positions were terminated effective immediately. The commission was created by Congress as an independent bipartisan agency to help with election funding, voting equipment, certification, and security guidance. We spoke with the elections director in Lebanon County about how *** new commission could impact elections in Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania, we certify all our own equipment, but we use labs that are certified by the commission at the federal level. So if the commission starts changing the standards which they certify, that’s gonna filter down to the labs that they certify and so on and so forth down to us. The firings are prompting concerns about election oversight and federal interference ahead of the midterms. New information about the threats state police say *** Delaware County man made to Governor Shapiro. Investigators say Richard John Franklin of Chester Township threatened to burn down the governor’s residence and made anti-Semitic remarks over *** $19 bill from tax. Filings court documents say he became irate at *** state representative’s office alongside his brother and is now facing numerous charges including terroristic threats. Franklin is currently in the Delaware County prison and he has *** preliminary hearing scheduled for July 16th. Two people are in the hospital after *** police chase involving state police in Adams County. According to state police, officers tried to initiate *** traffic stop just before 4 p.m. yesterday afternoon, and then the car drove away. That police chase went from Z Zep Road onto Old Harrisburg Road. In Strabane Township, police say they then intervened to stop the car and it overturned. They say the driver and passenger were seriously hurt and taken to Wellspan York Hospital. The names of the driver and passenger are not being released, and an investigation is underway. Power is restored after *** transformer explosion led to *** fire on the roof of *** bank in West Lampeter Township, Lancaster County. Crews told News *** part of the utility pole blew and ignited *** fire on the roof of the Citizens Bank just before 10:00 a.m. yesterday morning. That explosion caused about 2500 customers to be without power. The power was restored within an hour. Citizens Bank had *** group of contractors assess the building after the fire.
