Lyons pitcher Jack Slightom was selected on Saturday by the Kansas City Royals in the second round of the MLB Draft with the 56th overall selection.
As a senior this past spring Slightom posted a 7-0 record in 10 games with a 0.30 ERA and 0.485 WHIP with 87 strikeouts and just 13 hits, nine walks and two earned runs allowed over 45 1/3 innings.
The two-sport star, a quarterback in football, Slightom is committed to play baseball collegiately at Cincinnati but could forego that commitment to sign with the Royals. The slot value for the 56th pick is $1.725 million.
The 6-foot-5, 210-pound right-hander was ranked 60th by ESPN.com and 89th by MLB.com among all draft prospects.
Slightom went 5-4 with a 3.28 ERA as a junior at Lyons, but in the last year became a pitcher only for the first time and displayed huge growth. He also had a growth spurt of two inches since football season last fall when he led the Lyons football team to an 8-3 record and the second round of the playoffs.
Slightom increased his fastball velocity from around 90 mph to the upper 90s.
