(KBTX) – Sam Houston pitcher Ryan Peterson was selected by the Miami Marlins with the 71st overall pick in the 2026 MLB draft on Saturday.
Peterson’s selection came in the Competitive Balance B round. He is the highest-drafted Bearkat pitcher since Kevin Renz was picked 54th overall by the Detroit Tigers in 1984.
Peterson posted a 3.38 ERA this season and held opponents to a .236 batting average. The right-hander also recorded six wins and struck out 105 batters.
Peterson was named first-team All-Conference USA and was a semifinalist for the National Pitcher of the Year Award by the College Baseball Foundation.
