Both benches would clear but cooler heads prevailed and they were able to avoid a confrontation. Alexander was visibly upset and needed to be held back by his manager and coaches. Orioles manager Craig Albernaz confirmed that Alexander suffered a displaced fracture in his left hand and is expected to miss a good part of the season. “So, it hurts, but he has a good attitude about it,” Albernaz said. “How Blaze has been playing, on both sides of the ball, especially the way he was swinging the bat. We’ll see where he’s at rehab-wise and then we’ll go from there. But yeah, definitely a gut punch.”Alexander was leading the Orioles in hitting with a .312 batting average and was one of the hottest hitters in baseball over the past month with a .374 average. He didn’t have enough at-bats to qualify among the MLB hitting leaders, but would be fifth in the majors with his .312 average. He was also finding his form at third base thanks to the consistent playing time since May. His defense will be missed as much as his offense as he was much better defensively than Coby Mayo and Jeremiah Jackson at third.The Orioles have not announced a timetable for his recovery but it is expected that Alexander will miss at least a month if not two. This would allow a potential return for the final stretch of the season, but in the meantime his presence in the lineup will be missed.
