1. Missouri health officials investigating cyclosporiasis cases
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection that has impacted over 1,000 people across the U.S. and is caused by a microscopic parasite. It’s typically transferred through contaminated food or water with the main symptom being diarrhea. There have been over 1,600 cases across the county, according to the CDC.
2. Judge orders teen held in shooting deaths of 5 East St. Louis family members
Citing details presented by prosecutors that she described as a “horrifying sequence of events,” St. Clair County Associate Judge Sara Rice ordered a 16 year-old accused of killing five people and seriously injuring two others held pending further court action.
3. Federal, local agencies crack down on straw gun purchases in St. Louis with new campaign
Federal and local law enforcement agencies are cracking down on straw gun purchases with a new public awareness campaign, officials announced Wednesday.
4. New bill could expand radiation exposure compensation in St. Louis
A year after Congress passed legislation adding parts of the St. Louis region to a federal program to compensate victims of radiation exposure linked to the development of nuclear weapons, there are new efforts to expand the scope in the area.
After years of community surveys and meetings, aldermanic debates and discussion, St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer on Monday signed a bill that earmarks how the city will spend its $255 million share of the settlement over the Rams’ departure for Los Angeles.
6. Missouri flooding leaves one dead, while rescuers helicopter more than 200 to safety at summer camp
A woman was found dead in Missouri on Saturday after heavy rainfall battered parts of the state the previous day, forcing numerous emergency rescues and evacuations, including at a summer camp with more than 200 children.
7. Father, son die in plane crash south of Waterloo, authorities say
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department says two people were killed in Friday’s early morning plane crash that happened south of Waterloo, Ill. The victims were identified as a 48-year-old man and his 22-year-old son, both residents of Oklahoma. First responders were dispatched to the area around 2:34 a.m. for a possible crash. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department said the missing Beechcraft Baron 55 private aircraft has been found.
8. Cardinals lock up Wetherholt
The St. Louis Cardinals wasted no time in locking up rookie star JJ Wetherholt. According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the stud second baseman for the Birds on the Bat agreed to an eight-year, $112.5 million deal that can max out at $132 million.
9. KVC Missouri adds 3 locations
KVC Missouri is expanding its Child Advocacy Center network with three new locations. The nonprofit assumed operation of Compass Health Network centers in Festus, Farmington and Union early this month. Each will operate in KVC Missouri’s exiting Child Advocacy Center model.
