HEBRON – The result may have been the same, but the way it occurred was completely different for both the Hartington Security Bank Buzzards and Equity Bank Post 55 (Pender) junior legion baseball teams to open the Class C State tournament Saturday in DeWitt.

In the second game of the tournament, Hartington relied on the hot bats of Rylan Fischer and Grady Haberer to help propel them to a 13-0 win over Centura.

Hartington got on the board right way in the top of the first, plating two runs via a fielding error and an RBI single from Fischer.

After a flyout and strikeout to start the top of the second, Hartington would load the bases via a Parker Leise double, an error and walk before Haberer blasted a grand slam over the left field fence for a 6-0 lead.

Hartington added two more runs in the top of the third via an RBI single from Blake Bensen and an RBI groundout from Leise before hanging a five spot in the top of the fourth on an RBI double from Fischer, a passed ball, an RBI single from Leise and a two-RBI double from Hudson Whitmire.

While Haberer (two hits, five RBIs) and Fischer (four hits, two RBIs) got it done from the batters box, Leise and Gavin Klug combined for the five-strikeout shutout on the mound.

As for Equity Bank, it was a bit of a different story, as they were able to overcome a big inning from St. Paul for the 15-11 win.

St. Paul would get on the board with a run in the top of the first before Equity Bank plated four runs in the bottom of the frame on a two-RBI double from Tayt Welsh and a two-RBI triple Jaxson Wegner.

Both teams were held scoreless in the second before Equity Bank added three more runs in the bottom of the third via a bases loaded walk to Ryan Tremayne and a two-RBI single to Bryan Godinez for a 7-2 lead.

But that’s when things got interesting.

St. Paul slowly started to chip away in the fourth, as two RBI singles trimmed Equity Bank’s lead to 7-5 with nobody out.

After a walk put runners on first and second, Equity Bank was able to get the next two batters out via a strikeout and a groundout, which advance the on-base runners to second and third, before an intentional walk and a bases loaded single by St. Paul cut the lead to 7-6.

St. Paul eventually took the lead on the next play, as a line drive to center field resulted in an error, allowing three runs to come across for a 9-7 lead.

Following a pop out to end the damage caused by St. Paul in the top of the fourth, Equity Bank got to work at the plate the next three innings, scoring eight unanswered runs for a 15-9 lead.

Those runs came via a bases loaded walk, a passed ball, a sac fly from Owen Hathaway, a wild pitch (scored two), an RBI-double from Will Gutzmann, a sac fly from Welsh an RBI-single from Max Schuttler and a double steal.

St. Paul would get two of those runs back in the top of the seventh via an RBI-single and an error but would not be able to get any closer as Equity Banks survives with a 15-11 win.

Both teams will be back in action Sunday as Hartington battles Malcom at 3:50 while Equity Bank takes on Hebron at 8.
