Major League Baseball announced Monday that Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu has been honored as American League Player of the Week.
Abreu earned the honor after a scorching hot week in which he batted .357 (5 for 14) with four home runs, six RBI, two walks, five runs scored and a 1.685 OPS over four games. The 27-year-old led MLB in homers, tied for the MLB lead in runs scored and ranked second behind Atlanta’s Drake Baldwin, the National League Player of the Week, in total bases (17).
Abreu also became the first Red Sox player to hit multiple home runs in consecutive games since Mookie Betts back in 2016. According to OptaSTATS, Abreu is also the first player in MLBÂ history to hit multiple game-tying or go-ahead home runs in a victory two days in a row.
This marks Abreu’s first career weekly honor, and he is the second Red Sox player to earn AL Player of the Week this season, following Willson Contreras the week of May 26.
Entering Monday night’s game Abreu is batting .264 with 15 home runs, 49 RBI, a .795 OPS and 3.9 Wins Above Replacement. The two-time Gold Glove winner is also enjoying another stellar season defensively and has consistently ranked as one of Boston’s top all-around players.
