Game 1 of Wednesday’s doubleheader in New York set the Pittsburgh Pirates on a collision course with two familiar faces now playing for the Yankees.

Gerrit Cole, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft by the Pirates, started at Yankee Stadium, while Mars native and former closer David Bednar came into a tie game in the ninth.

Cole struck out 11 in seven innings and Bednar pitched a scoreless frame, but the Pirates prevailed 5-3 in 10 innings.

Jared Triolo had the game-winning RBI single for the Pirates, scoring automatic runner Nick Gonzales.

Triolo entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the eighth and two innings later, broke the 3-3 tie with a base hit off of Fernando Cruz.

Jake Mangum then padded the lead with an RBI single to score pinch-runner Billy Cook from second, making it 5-3.

Up by two in the bottom of the 10th, Gregory Soto hung on to earn his 13th save.

The Pirates (53-49) led 3-0 in the seventh inning, but Carmen Mlodzinski, replacing starter Mitch Keller, allowed a game-tying three-run homer to Ben Rice in the bottom of the inning.

Cole opposed Keller on the hill for the Yankees (56-45) taking a perfect game into the fifth inning.

Keller was solid over five innings in his first post-All-Star break start, allowing no runs while escaping a few jams.

Cole allowed a pair of homers to Jacob Gonzalez and Gonzales, which allowed the Pirates to take a 3-0 lead into the seventh.

Both Keller, who struck out six with a pair of walks, allowing three hits, and Cole (three runs, four hits, no walks) took no-decisions.

Cole was sharp from the jump, striking out the side in the second and punching out two more in the third.

Keller also had a smooth first three frames, aside from plunking Austin Wells in the third.

Bryan Reynolds then got the Pirates out of the inning by laying out for a diving grab of a Rice fly ball.

With Cole perfect through four, Keller’s command failed him in the bottom of the inning, as he walked Spencer Jones and Cody Bellinger to begin the frame.

But Keller battled back, striking out Jazz Chisholm and Jose Caballero back to back, keeping the game scoreless.

Cole struck out the first two men he faced in the fifth, Esmerlyn Valdez and Ryan O’Hearn, but from there, his perfect game came crashing down.

Gonzales became the Pirates’ first baserunner of the afternoon, hitting a two-out single, and Gonzalez followed by roping a two-run homer into right field to put his club up 2-0.

The home run was Gonzalez’s fourth on the year and second since being traded from the White Sox to Pittsburgh on July 11.

Keller had another jam to work out of in the fifth, as Wells and Trent Grisham got aboard with base hits.

But Keller struck out Rice and got Jones to fly out, extinguishing the fire.

To protect the Pirates’ two-run lead, manager Don Kelly inserted Mlodzinski in the sixth inning, ending Keller’s afternoon at 75 pitches.

Mlodzinski struck out a pair in his first inning, maintaining the score.

In the seventh, O’Hearn narrowly missed a home run to right field, the wind at Yankee Stadium allowing Jasson Dominguez to make a catch at the warning track.

But Gonzales, the Pirates’ next batter, made contact and sent a fly ball to a similar area.

This time, it had enough carry to leave the yard, as the Pirates took a 3-0 lead in Cole’s final inning.

In the seventh, the Yankees tied the game, as Rice jacked Mlodzinski for a three-run homer, his 30th of the season.

Rice scored McMahon, who led off with a double, and Wells, who walked.

Bednar allowed a single and walk in the ninth but didn’t allow the Pirates to take a lead, while in the bottom of the ninth, Montgomery delivered a clean frame to send the game to extras.
