Chapel Hill, N.C. — No. 1 North Carolina is headed back to the super regionals and is just two wins away from a return to the College World Series.
And the Tar Heels might not stop there.
“You guys have a team that can win a national championship,” Oklahoma coach Skip Johnson said after the Tar Heels’ dominant 14-4 victory on Monday in the winner-take-all final of the Chapel Hill regional. “I can tell you that they’re good. They’re really good. They can run. They can do a lot of things.”
On Monday, the Tar Heels showed off how good they are, getting production throughout the lineup all game, another spectacular performance from Gavin Gallaher and overpowering pitching from freshman reliever Walker McDuffie in the final innings.
UNC, ranked No. 1 in the polls but seeded fifth in the tournament, will host Arizona in next week’s best-of-three super regional for a trip to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. UNC reached the CWS for the 12th time in school history last season. Arizona won the Eugene Regional.
It is the fifth time in seven completed college baseball seasons that UNC has advanced to the super regional round.
Against the Sooners, eight Tar Heels scored at least one run and seven had at least one hit or one RBI.
Gallaher, a sophomore third baseman, had four hits, including two home runs, four runs and four RBIs. He went 13-for-18 across four regional games, driving in 10 runs.
“I’m afraid to talk about Gavin,” UNC coach Scott Forbes said. “It’s like a no-hitter. I told everybody else to just touch him. That’s as good of a performance in a regional that I’ve seen.”
Through the first eight games of the season, Gallaher was batting .148. In the first 32 games, he was batting .246. He ended the regional at .323, up .45 from where he was at the end of the ACC Tournament.
“This year, as a whole, has been a little bit up and down,” said Gallaher, who is from Apex. “But I think I started to put it together a little bit this back half of the season.”
He had lots of help Monday.
Hunter Stokley added three RBIs, Jackson Van De Brake had three hits, three runs and two RBIs, and Alex Madera and Carter French added three hits each for UNC, which forced Oklahoma to use seven pitchers. UNC finished with 17 hits.
The Tar Heels got a season-high five-plus innings from freshman starter Ryan Lynch, who allowed five hits and two runs while striking out six. McDuffie replaced him with one on and no one out in the sixth inning and struck out the side. McDuffie struck out seven across four innings of relief, allowing two hits and two runs.
The Tar Heels worked to save both pitchers throughout the weekend for a potential Monday game.
“Just try not to make it bigger than it is and make the hitters better than they are,” said McDuffie, whose black rim glasses may quickly become his signature. He watched anxiously from the stands when UNC lost in the College World Series last season.
“I was wanting that to be me,” he said.
Now he might help guide the Tar Heels there.
North Carolina scored three unearned runs in the first inning, aided by a two-out throwing error by Oklahoma second baseman Kyle Branch. Stokley’s two-run double put the Tar Heels on the board, and Madera, voted to the all-tournament team, followed with a single to score Stokley in the top of the first inning.
After Oklahoma cut it to 3-2 on a two-run home run in the second inning, UNC added four runs in the third and another in the fourth to gain a comfortable edge. In the eighth, UNC added home runs from Van De Brake and Gallaher. And in the ninth, Gallaher crushed a three-run shot to left field.
North Carolina defeated Oklahoma 11-5 on Saturday, but the Sooners beat UNC 9-5 on Sunday night to force Monday’s finale. Nebraska and Holy Cross were eliminated earlier from the double-elimination regional.
The Tar Heels are one of five North Carolina schools that made the field. Duke advanced to the super regional round, while NC State and East Carolina were eliminated Sunday. Wake Forest faced Tennessee in a winner-take-all game Monday night.
UNC is one of at least four ACC teams to advance to the super regionals, joining Duke, Florida State and Louisville. Two SEC teams have clinched a spot in the next round. Five spots were still left to be determined.
“I do feel like the ACC this year was the best it had been from top to bottom,” Forbes said. “… I have a lot of respect for the SEC, but also think the ACC is as good as any league in the country.”
