The Padres lost to the Braves 7-6 on Wednesday in a game that saw 11 of the 13 runs scored in the final two half innings. With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 8th inning after Jackson Merrill’s game-tying solo home run in the top of the 7th, the Braves scored 6 runs off of Wandy Peralta and Randy Vasquez, and took a commanding 7-1 lead into the 9th inning. The Padres rallied however, scoring 5 runs of their own to get to within a run of the Braves. The Padres strung together three consecutive run-scoring hits: an RBI-single by Gavin Sheets, a 2-run triple by Fernando Tatis Jr., and a 2-run homer from Luis Rengifo. Down by a run, Manny Machado hit what was nearly a game-tying solo home run, but it hooked foul. He would go on strike out, followed by Ty France striking out to end the game, as the Padres weren’t able to overcome the 6 runs they gave up in the bottom of the 8th inning. Griffin Canning will start on Thursday morning for the Padres as they aim to split the 4-game series in Atlanta.
