Good fortune smiled on the American Legion Post 28 Oak Orchard baseball team in their quest to reach the postseason.
The Legion Post 14 team’s two losses opened the door for head coach Steve Newman’s 9-9 squad to reach the Delaware American Legion state tournament at Wilson Field on the campus of Wilmington University in Newcastle.
“We also benefitted from having several forfeit wins against teams that didn’t have enough players and could not reschedule,” said Newman, Post 28’s bench boss in each of its three seasons.
Legion Post 28, seeded No. 4, was set to open the four-team double-elimination tournament on Thursday, July 23, (after Coastal Point press time) against No. 1 seed Legion Post 30 beginning at 2 p.m.
A victory will send Post 28 to a Friday, July 24, game against the winner of the opening game between the No. 2 vs. No. 3 seeds. A loss would send Post 28 to a Friday, July 24, game against the loser of the other opener, beginning at 11 a.m.
