ARLINGTON – Skip Schumaker doesn’t really believe in statement games. Not in a 162-game schedule. Not in the middle of July.
Then how about a game that illustrates the identity he seeks from his team: Play hard, play hurt, lift your teammates?

There, you might have a case for Saturday’s 7-1 win over Seattle that was so convincing it knocked the Mariners clear into third place. What more do you need to see than Wyatt Langford fouling two balls hard off the top of his left foot in a single at-bat, pounding the ground with his fist in pain, only to rise up, double in a run and then score himself? And staying in the game beyond that to have yet another hit, his third of the night.

Or Nathan Eovaldi, clearly conscious of the moment, shaking off an illness that has dogged him for a week and pitching seven innings of three-hit baseball and recalling “Big Game Nate” of the 2023 playoffs.
“It just shows you and shows the club, Wyatt is going to give everything he has, no matter how he feels, and he’s going to show that he can play at not 100% ,” Schumaker said. “[Eovaldi] is doing the same thing. They weren’t 100% tonight.
“And they are doing whatever they can to help the team win. It was incredibly impressive what he did for the team. It shows a lot of these young guys what this looks like and should look like.”

By the end of the night, with Houston winning its fifth straight game, the Astros had moved into second. They trail the Rangers by two games. It’s the first time this season the Rangers have had a lead as big as two full games. The Rangers visit Houston next weekend for three games leading up to the trade deadline.
With Corey Seager out for more than half the season at this point, the Rangers’ identity is changing. Langford is showing he can become the core of a productive offense. Since June 5, when he came back from a forearm strain, he is slashing .323/.371/.638/1.009. Yes, there was a two-week absence in there for a hamstring strain. Nobody is saying he’s invincible, just that he can recognize when a game is important and the difference between playing hurt and playing injured. Post-game X-rays showed no fracture and Langford was putting weight on his leg.
Langford, who had doubled off Bryan Woo to start the Rangers’ three-run first, fouled the first pitch he saw in the second off the top of his left foot. It knocked him off his feet and he spent a moment walking it off. Two pitches later, he fouled another pitch off virtually the exact same spot, leaving him sprawled on the ground. But he got up, worked back from an 0-2 count and rifled a fastball at 106 mph into the left field corner. Got taped up between innings and then came out to play four more innings before coming out when it looked like his spot might not come up again.
“I mean, my leg hurt, but I don’t know anything different,” Langford said. “I was just trying to compete. I just wanted to keep playing. I don’t want to come out at all.”
Meanwhile, Eovaldi, coming off an illness-shortened four-inning outing in Atlanta that left him drained, held the Mariners to a hit through the first four innings and just a run on 91 pitches.

“Those two guys are superstars, and even when they’re grinding, they still show up and post and compete,” said Joc Pederson, who reached 1,000 career hits in Friday’s win and added three more on Saturday. “Wyatt just shows how tough he is; he’s a savage.”
Said Eovaldi: “It just shows the warrior that’s in him, the competitor, everything. He told me, like, ‘I’m not going to be able to really run down any balls,’ but he went out there and he hit. And I’ll take that.”
Almost sounds like an identity.
