CHEYENNE — The Cheyenne Sixers brought the Sheridan Jets’ Cinderella run through the Wyoming American Legion Baseball Division I state tournament to an end Tuesday afternoon.

The Sixers got a seven-inning complete game effort from senior right-hander Zach Hall to beat Sheridan’s junior-varsity squad 8-1 in the state championship game at Hladky Stadium in Gillette.

The championship is Cheyenne’s 22nd since 2001. The win was a measure of redemption for the Sixers, who were fourth at last summer’s state tournament.

“We’re a different team, and we have a different type of leaders,” junior shortstop Quentin King told KFBC radio. “… We are an energy team, so we play off energy. Me (Braden Pearson, Brodin Robbins) and Colin Crecelius, we all bring that type of energy that works well with our team and what we do.”

Sheridan took a short-lived lead in the second inning, turning a leadoff single into a two-out run.

The Sixers responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame, starting with Kayden Tafoya’s leadoff triple to center field. Tafoya scored one pitch later when Demitri Cotton grounded out to shortstop. Brodin Robbins added an RBI single, and King drove home a run with a sacrifice fly to right for a 3-1 lead.

Cheyenne added two runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth.

Cotton and Braden Pearson both had two RBI. Pearson’s lone hit was a triple.

King also hit a triple and drove home a run. Mason Maggard had a single and an RBI.

“The first thing we said was, ‘Don’t overlook that team there,’” Pearson told KFBC radio. “Although they’re a JV team, they are the second-best team in the state. They’re here playing in the state championship, and we still needed to play our game and not overlook anybody. That’s what we did.”

Hall struck out four batters and scattered five hits during his seven innings on the mound. He needed just 88 pitches to go the distance.

“He’s not an overpowering pitcher, by any means, but he’s going to fill up the (strike) zone and put it in the defense’s hands,” Sixers manager Brad Barker III told KFBC. “Outside of a couple leadoff walks, he did what he does. He’s able to put it in the hands of the defense, who he trusts greatly.”

The win is Barker III’s 100th as Post 6’s varsity manager.

Cheyenne (54-15-2) faces Hawaii’s state champion in the Northwest Regional at approximately 1:30 p.m. Aug. 5 in Medford, Oregon.
