The San Francisco Giants waited until there was less than 24 hours until the trade deadline, but finally made their first deal on Sunday night.

According to multiple reports, the Giants are sending Tyler Mahle to the Atlanta Braves for Anthony Molina, a right-handed reliever. (Robert Murray of Fansided was first to report.)

Trading Mahle is the first move of many expected over the next 20 hours, which should be very busy for Posey and the Giants.

Mahle signed a one-year, $10 million deal to join the Giants rotation this offseason. The veteran right-hander struggled early and ended up with some poor stats: a 3-9 record in 18 starts with a 5.13 ERA.

But Mahle has looked good in recent weeks. Mahle picked up two wins in his four July starts, with a 2.82 ERA and 16 strikeouts to just six walks in 22.1 innings. In his final Giants start on Saturday in San Diego, Mahle tied his season-high with nine strikeouts.

Molina, 24, was originally signed by the Tampa Bay Rays out of Venezuela and made his MLB debut with the Colorado Rockies in 2024 as a Rule 5 pick, where he pitched for two seasons. Atlanta claimed him off waivers in the offseason and has mostly kept Molina in Triple-A, though he does have five innings in the big leagues this year.

The Giants entered 2026 expecting to contend for a playoff spot. But ever since they got swept by the Yankees in the first series of the year, the season has gone off the rails. San Francisco hasn’t won more than three games in a row all season long and has been swept seven times this year, falling as low as 18 games under .500. And there have been plenty of attention-grabbing moments that have put a spotlight on Giants players, for reasons both on and off the field.

Given how bad the season has gone, it’s been known for weeks (if not a few months) that the Giants would be sellers at the trade deadline. The only player that president of baseball operations Posey has outright said the Giants will not be trading is the team’s ace, starting pitcher Logan Webb. There have been numerous reports indicating the Giants would love to find a trade partner for (at least) one of their high-priced superstars — first baseman Rafael Devers, shortstop Willy Adames and third baseman Matt Chapman. 

But on Sunday night, the moves started with Mahle. Now, the big question left is how much more they will do before the deadline, which is at 3 p.m. on Monday.
