Red Sox in talks to acquire division-rival catcher at trade deadline (report)

The Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles are seriously discussing a trade that would bring switch-hitting catcher Adley Rutschman to Boston, according to multiple reports.

Rutschman, 28, is hitting .251 with a .764 OPS over 67 games in his fifth year in the majors and third All-Star season, but is currently on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left wrist. He would be a significant defensive upgrade behind the dish for the Red Sox, as he ranks in MLB’s 100th percentile in Caught-Stealing Above Average, 96th percentile in Fielding Run Value and 93rd percentile in Framing.

The Red Sox are closely reviewing Rutschman’s medicals, with particular emphasis on his current wrist injury.

Baltimore selected Rutschman first overall in the 2019 draft, and he debuted with the club on May 21, 2022. He is under club control through the end of 2027.

The MLB trade deadline is 6 p.m. ET Monday.
