The Yankees need a catcher. After missing out on Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox, New York has to pivot and find a catcher to lead them into the 2026 MLB Postseason. While no one will be on Rutschman’s level, an MLB insider has linked the Yankees to a massive player from the Reds in 2026.
New York may turn its attention to Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson after losing out on two catchers, as reported by MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. Stephenson, who has been with Cincinnati his entire MLB career, is one of the premier catchers available at the 2026 MLB trade deadline.
In 2026, the Reds catcher has a .256 average and .759 OPS with nine home runs and 32 runs batted in across 266 at-bats. Stephenson was emotional talking about possibly leaving Cincinnati after Sunday’s game, but competing for a World Series would help those feelings if it happens.
So, why do the Yankees need to trade for Stephenson? This is almost a necessity at this point.

The Reds are open to moving Stephenson and the Yankees have the talent to get the deal done. With some teams out of the market for a catcher, New York could be in a prime position to acquire Stephenson. This is the deal that has to be completed more than any other before the 2026 MLB trade deadline.
It is up to the Yankees to keep up with the Red Sox and Rays. If not, this could be a massive impact on the organization’s chances in October.
