Monday is an off-day for the San Francisco Giants Minor League Baseball A-Ball affiliates … but it’s no longer a dead day for prospects playing baseball. The Arizona Complex Season has been underway for quite a while now, and on Monday the Dominican Summer League got started as well. More baseball!

News

One small bit of news, since the DSL season is getting underway. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic noted on social media on Monday that the Giants are listing the top prospect in their 2025 international signing class as “Josuar González.” There had been some question about what name he would go by, and I had been writing his name as “Josuar de Jesus González,” which is still what he’s listed as on the Minor League page. But, going forward, he’ll be referred to as “Josuar González” here.

Arizona Complex League (16-7)

ACL Giants beat the ACL Angels 7-2
Box score

The star for the ACL Giants was rehabbing first baseman Jeremiah Jenkins, who had a sensational day, hitting a perfect 2-2 with a home run, 2 walks, and 5 runs batted in. Hard to have a day much better than that!

It was the 10th rehab game for Jenkins, a 14th-round pick in 2024 who should be back with Low-A San Jose before long. It was also his 2nd consecutive game with a home run, bumping his OPS to .968 and his wRC+ to 147, so he’s clearly settling into the season.

Second baseman Dario Reynoso (20 years, 2023 IFA) continued his excellent season, hitting 1-2 with 3 walks, though he also struck out and was caught stealing. The right-handed hitter is doing exactly what the Giants hoped he would in his 2nd pass through the level: improving across the board. He’s bumped his slash line from .206/.381/.323 to .346/.462/.558, which is good for a 1.019 OPS and a 165 wRC+. He’s also cut into his strikeout rate, though it still is a concerningly-high 30.8%.

On the mound, it was a fantastic performance from LHP Ricardo Estrada (22 years, 2021 IFA), who is making the most of his opportunity after 4 years in the DSL. Estrada went 5 innings in this game — a fairly deep start in the ACL — and allowed just 5 hits with 0 walks and 1 run, while striking out 9 batters. Estrada now has 28 strikeouts against just 5 walks in 20.2 innings this year, and has a very tidy 2.18 ERA, albeit with a 3.76 FIP.

Dominican Summer League Black (0-1)

DSL Giants Black lost to the DSL Mets Orange 8-5 (7 innings)

The big news as the DSL season gets underway is that we get our first look at shortstop Josuar González (No. 5 CPL, 17 years, 2025 IFA). And, like the other top international prospects the Giants signed in recent years — Jhonny Level in 2024 and Rayner Arias in 2023 — it appears that the young switch-hitter is going to get off to a strong start. It was an absolutely delightful debut for arguably the top international prospect in the entire 2025 class, as he went 3-4 and smacked a double, with 1 strikeout. He also showed off his speed, by beating out an infield single and a bunt single. Welcome to the pros, Josuar! No pressure or anything, kid…

Plenty of other good performances, but few that really stood out. RHP Alfonso Perez (19 years, 2022 IFA) had a strong game out of the bullpen, throwing 2 scoreless innings with just 1 hit allowed, while striking out 2. Perez has really struggled with his strikeout-to-walk ratio in his 1st 3 DSL seasons, so hopefully this is a sign of good things to come.

Dominican Summer League Orange (1-0)

DSL Giants Orange beat the DSL White Sox 7-0 (7 innings)

A spectacular start to the season for shortstop Anthony Marquez (18 years, 2024 IFA), who is hoping to build on a strong debut campaign last year. Marquez was the DSL player who very surprisingly popped up as a top-20 prospect in the system when Fangraphs did their preseason rankings. The Giants weren’t quite as convinced, as he wasn’t in the large group of players that made their way to Papago to start the season in the ACL.

But Marquez certainly looked the part on Monday, hitting 3-4 with both a home run and a double, and knocking in 5 of the team’s 7 runs. What a day!

Also nice offensive days for designated hitter Jose Astudillo (21 years, 2021 IFA), who went 2-2 with a walk and a stolen base; left fielder Rainer Espinoza (16 years, 2025 IFA), who drew walks in all 3 of his plate appearances in his professional debut; and third baseman Juan Colorado (18 years, 2024 IFA), who hit 1-2 with a double, a hit by pitch, and a strikeout.

A fantastic pitching day for the DSL Orange team, and the star was the starter, RHP Jose T Perez (21 years, 2021 IFA) who, due to injury, was pitching in just his 5th game as a pro, and his 1st in 4 years. Welcome back, Jose! He was utterly fantastic, giving up just 2 hits in 3 shutout innings, while striking out 6 batters. You love to see it!
