Despite having the second-longest active playoff drought in the major American sports, the Los Angeles Angels are, by one measure, the most successful franchise in MLB history; they’re the only team never to lose 100 games in a season. That impressive run looks at risk of coming to an end this season, as they’re currently on pace to finish 62-100.

Los Angeles will play a three-game road series against the Baltimore Orioles starting tonight with a 6:35 p.m. ET matchup. Given that the Orioles are one of the easier opponents on the Angels’ remaining schedule, this series represents an opportunity to pick up some wins.

For tonight’s opener, Grayson Rodriguez will take the mound for Los Angeles, and Baltimore will turn to Cade Povich.

Let’s break down this cross-country clash with some odds and lines at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Los Angeles Angels at Baltimore Orioles Best Bets

Over 9 (-117): The Angels don’t exactly have a good pitcher to turn to, and the Orioles aren’t countering with a much better option, as Povich has been extremely disappointing even in Triple-A this season.

Baltimore Orioles -1.5 (+133): That said, there are different levels to Rodriguez’s and Povich’s struggles. Rodriguez has nearly an 8.00 expected ERA, and Los Angeles had to rebuild its bullpen on the fly at the trade deadline.

Los Angeles Angels at Baltimore Orioles prediction, preview

Los Angeles fell behind the pace pretty early in the season, as after starting 11-10, it proceeded to lose 24 of its next 30 games. Since the All-Star break, the Angels have kept losing, going just 5-10, and they now have the worst record in all of baseball. Los Angeles hasn’t been able to hit since the Midsummer Classic, posting a league-worst .609 OPS across that span, and even Mike Trout, the team’s best hitter, hasn’t exhibited much power. Dealing catcher Logan O’Hoppe and outfielder Jo Adell, both of whom have been worth negative WAR this season, could be addition by subtraction, but it’s not like the Angels have high-quality ready-made replacements, either. Plus, Los Angeles has had both a bottom-10 rotation and bullpen, and it reshuffled those areas dramatically at the trade deadline, dealing ace José Soriano to the Toronto Blue Jays as well as relievers Ryan Zeferjahn, Brent Suter, Chase Silseth, and Kirby Yates. It’s difficult to picture what the Angels’ bullpen will look like moving forward.

Meanwhile, the Orioles look set to miss the playoffs for the second straight season, though at 54-58, they’re just 2.5 games behind the mediocre American League’s final Wild Card spot. Though they’re trending in the right direction overall, going 15-10 since the start of July, their offense has continued to flounder after the All-Star break, and trading Adley Rutschmann and Taylor Ward probably won’t help in the short term. At least Baltimore managed to hold onto former first overall pick Jackson Holliday, who’s posted an .851 OPS since the Midsummer Classic. The Orioles have also had a slightly below-average pitching staff, although their bullpen has posted an impressive 3.48 ERA since the All-Star break. Dealing away Kremer, who had just a 6.50 ERA in his seven starts, probably won’t hurt, but reliever Tyler Wells is a big loss. I’d expect Baltimore to get somewhat worse in the short term.

Rodriguez hasn’t been impressive at all in his return from the various arm ailments that cost him the entire 2025 season, making just 10 starts and giving up at least one run in each of them for a 7.98 ERA in total. Advanced numbers don’t suggest that he deserves to be that much better; his 7.93 expected ERA ranks in just the first percentile, as does his .320 expected batting average. In fact, he also ranks in the bottom decile in average exit velocity, chase rate, barrel rate, hard-hit rate, and ground ball rate, and the Orioles are the only team with an average exit velocity north of 90 miles per hour. Additionally, despite whiffing a lot, Baltimore has among the highest walk rates in the league, and although trading away Ward, the American League leader in walks, could hurt, Pete Alonso has earned plenty of free passes, too. The splits aren’t in Rodriguez’s favor, either; although he’s been slightly better on the road throughout his career, the Orioles are a much tougher matchup at home.

Baltimore isn’t turning to a star, either, as Povich has never posted a season with a sub-5 ERA. In fact, the lefty hasn’t made an MLB start since May 7, tuning up instead in the minors, where he’s had a 6.30 ERA across eight appearances for Triple-A Norfolk. He’s even in especially poor form at that level, turning in a 6.1-inning, 10-hit, six-run stinker on last Wednesday in his most recent start. At any rate, though, he should have a slight advantage over Rodriguez, as his 5.34 xERA and .272 xBA are better than Rodriguez’s marks. Additionally, Povich would rank above the league median in both chase and whiff rate if he’d pitched enough innings to qualify, and Los Angeles both chases and whiffs at extremely high rates. His tendency to give up barrels could be a problem against a team that finds the barrel frequently given their talent level, but he’s at least done a solid job inducing ground balls, mitigating one of the Angels’ few strengths. Still, Povich is in for a challenge; he has been slightly worse at home across the three levels at which he’s pitched this season, and Los Angeles has been better on the road.

Los Angeles Angels at Baltimore Orioles pick, best bet

Best Bet: Over 9 (-117)

I’d have picked the under if the Orioles had started Trevor Rogers, who pitched an MLB game the same day Povich last started in the minors, but he’s a far worse option, and as bad as the Angels’ offense has been as of late, their road form could make this game sneak over the total.

Strong Lean: Baltimore Orioles -1.5 (+133)

Although Baltimore weakened its bullpen slightly at the trade deadline by sending away Wells, it’s been in excellent form as of late, and Povich is a better pitcher than Rodriguez. I have no idea what Los Angeles’ pitching plan is beyond Rodriguez after it traded away half its bullpen.
