Casey Mize makes his Padres debut as series continues against the Diamondbacks.

After being acquired at last week’s trade deadline, Casey Mize (4-6, 2.70 ERA) makes his first start with his new team on Wednesday night as he takes the mound for the San Diego Padres in the third game of their four-game mid-week series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Winners of four series since the return from the All-Star Break, Arizona is in the hunt for a Wild Card spot in the National League as they send rookie southpaw Mitch Bratt (0-1, 5.23 ERA) to the mound for his sixth Major League start and second home start since making his debut back in late June.

Mize, the number one overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, spent the first six years of his career with the Detroit Tigers, where he went 27-31 with a 3.95 ERA, winning a career-high 14 games in 2025, two years after missing the entire 2023 campaign as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. 

Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte leads Arizona in hits, batting average, home runs and RBIs this season but is off to a slow start in August, hitting just .067 in his first four games this month. Marte has spent 10 of his 12 big league seasons in Arizona, posting 100 or more hits in every season since 2018, aside from the pandemic-shortened campaign in 2020.
