Red Sox’ Ranger Suarez leaves start after three laborious innings

Red Sox starter Ranger Suarez threw 70 pitches over three innings Thursday night, and did not return to the mound for the top of the fourth.

The All-Star southpaw labored through a four-run third inning that required 42 pitches and featured a leadoff walk to former Red Sox first-round pick Braden Montgomery and two-run homer over the Green Monster by erstwhile Red Sox top prospect Chase Meidroth.

Suarez was allowed, and was able to finish the frame. He did so by striking out catcher Joey Bart, the eighth White Sox batter of the inning, then walked slowly back to the Red Sox dugout.

The Red Sox have carefully monitored Suarez’s pitch limit following the July 5 groin strain that kept him off the mound until July 26, and from which he returned without going on a rehab assignment. He has thrown 64, 65, and 70 pitches in three starts since being activated from the injured list.
