One of MLB’s brightest young stars will have to sit for at least two weeks.

Former East Carolina pitcher Trey Yesavage on Wednesday was placed on the Toronto Blue Jays’ 15-day injured list. This came after he exited early Tuesday against the Astros.

An MRI Wednesday showed left knee inflammation. 

Yesavage left Tuesday’s game during his warmup throws for the third inning. Before that, he pitched a pair of scoreless frames with just one walk allowed. 

The 2024 first-round draft pick has had an up-and-down season, coming off his magical postseason debut last year that included a World Series win. In 2026, Yesavage owns a 5-5 mark and has thrown 91 strikeouts through 93.2 innings.

Trade deadline

This week’s trade deadline was busy for ex-Pirates as two ECU products were dealt Monday. 

Longtime MLB reliever Jeff Hoffman was traded from the Blue Jays to Minnesota. Toronto received pitching prospects Dasan Hill and John Klein, while the Twins added cash considerations in addition to Hoffman’s services.

The closer has 75 strikeouts through 48 innings this year, and 50 saves for his career.

Another last-minute deal Monday was Miami sending Connor Norby to the Rockies.

Norby, along with prospect arm Aiden May, was exchanged for righty Victor Vodnik. He’ll reunite with former ECU teammate Zach Agnos, who is a reliever for Colorado. 

This season, Norby slashed a line of .205/.313/.325 in 65 games with Miami. The infielder on Monday was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Whisenhunt in rotation

Another ex-Pirate, Carson Whisenhunt, has earned a permanent rotation spot for San Francisco.

The lefty last week replaced injured Giants starter Trevor McDonald. Since then, however, he’s struggled. Whisenhunt (2-3) has allowed 14 earned runs in 11.2 innings during that stretch, including Wednesday’s loss to Texas where he gave up four earned through 3.1 frames. 

His ERA for the season ballooned to 7.25.
