SAN DIEGO — Cristian Javier will take another turn in the Houston Astros rotation, starting Sunday’s series finale against the Padres at Petco Park.

Drawing a start last Monday after the Astros moved Tatsuya Imai from the rotation to the bullpen, Javier threw a quality start against the Blue Jays, allowing three runs over six innings. It marked Javier’s longest outing this season, in which he missed three months to a shoulder strain, and matched his longest start since returning from Tommy John surgery last August.

Imai was available out of the Astros bullpen for Saturday’s game in San Diego, said manager Joe Espada, who indicated the structure of the rotation may be fluid in the upcoming weeks.

“Looking at the performance, matchups, just kind of go day-by-day — that’s how we’re going to kind of move forward here for the next couple of weeks,” Espada said.

The Astros will have three more off days before starting a stretch of 13 games with no off day Aug. 25. That could allow them flexibility to maneuver the rotation, though a more imminent decision might loom early next week.

In the current five-man rotation, Ronel Blanco, who started Friday night in San Diego, would be on turn to pitch again Wednesday in the finale of a series at San Francisco. It would require Blanco to pitch on four days’ rest, which he has not done since returning to the majors from elbow surgery. Blanco owns a 6.98 ERA in four starts since his return, meanwhile, working less than five innings in three of them.

Blanco has allowed 11 walks and six home runs in 19 ⅓ innings, both issues that Espada noted after his start Friday. In a radio appearance on 790 AM last week, general manager Dana Brown suggested the Astros could “rotate (Blanco) and Imai out at times, just to get him built back up.” Both invite question of whether Houston is comfortable starting Blanco on four days’ rest or might push his next outing back.

Imai made his first relief appearance after Javier’s start against Toronto, throwing three perfect innings. Espada did not specify if he would be available out of the bullpen beyond Saturday.
