DYERSVILLE, Iowa — You shouldn’t expect to see “Shoeless” Joe Jackson walking out of a field of corn stalks in August 2026, but the baseball game between the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies at the historic “Field of Dreams” August 13, will go to great lengths to invoke the history and magic of the game of baseball in a mid-summer special.
It’ll be the first time since 2022 that the famed baseball diamond has hosted a Major League Baseball game on its grounds and the Minnesota Twins have been chosen as the home team for the one-night spectacle before resuming their three-game series with the Phillies at Target Field later that weekend.
The site the teams will play on is the same setting for the famous 1989 movie ‘Field of Dreams’ and features Kevin Costner as Ray Kinsella, an Iowa farmer who builds a mysterious baseball field in the middle of an otherwise everyday cornfield in rural America. The ghosts of baseball’s past become attracted to the field, and resume playing the game they love on the same field the Twins and Phillies will share on Thursday, August 13.
With the movie firmly engrained in baseball culture, and the sport of baseball forever clutching the timelessness of the game, the MLB has designated this game and the two games held there in prior years, as a mid-summer spectacle, similar to how the NFL plays in London or basketball has implemented the NBA Cup. It’s a way to inject intrigue and excitement into an otherwise long MLB season and a creative opportunity to invoke the classic, nostalgic appreciation that baseball radiates.
The game will be streamed on Netflix, where you’ll find the game framed with old-time bleachers and cornstalks forming the outfield dimensions rather than multi-tiered stadiums and flashing scoreboards. The Twins and Phillies will both be donning more traditional versions of their uniforms that give the proper nod to the past.
The game is a reminder that while everything in the world may constantly be in a state of change, baseball will always stay true to itself. Just baseball, and that’s the way it should be.
Prior to the Thursday night Big League game, a Triple-A matchup between the St. Paul Saints and Iowa Cubs will play at the Field of Dreams site two days prior on August 11, available on MLB Network.
