To close out a very busy Sunday of Major League Baseball action, Sunday Night Baseball spotlights a fun interleague matchup between the Houston Astros and the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. NBC has the coverage at 8:20 p.m. ET of the rubber game in the three-game set. With both teams in the playoff hunt, let’s take a look at my top three best bets from the player prop market in this Sunday Night Baseball matchup.

The Padres are slightly favored at -116 on the moneyline and are getting 57% of the bets on the moneyline as of Sunday afternoon. The over/under is 9.0 runs, with 59% of the bets on the over.

Astros at Padres Prop Bets for Sunday 8/9/26

Cristian Javier Under 1.5 Walks (+151)

Javier has been limited to nine games and five starts for the Astros this season. After working his way back from Tommy John surgery last year, he missed much of this season with a Grade 2 shoulder strain. He has an ugly 6.59 ERA, 5.17 FIP and 1.68 WHIP through 27 1/3 innings this year, but he has shown some encouraging signs lately, especially in terms of his control.

Javier returned to the rotation last Monday and went six innings against the Blue Jays, allowing three runs on seven hits. He didn’t walk a single batter in that outing, and he also didn’t issue a free pass against the Angels over five shutout innings in his previous appearance.

Early in the season, Javier issued nine walks in 8 1/3 innings in his first two starts, and that bout of wildness early in the year skews his overall season numbers. In 18 innings since returning from the IL, he has issued six walks and none over his last 12 frames in his last three games.

The Padres as a team are just above league average with a 9.2% walk rate, and they have an even higher 10.2% walk rate over their last 25 games. However, even with their good plate approach lately, Javier’s recent success is enough for me to buy this prop as one of the best bets on the board for this Sunday night. Even if Javier does get knocked around and gives up some runs, his improved control lately makes this a good option to limit his free passes.

Fernando Tatis Jr. 3+ Hits + Runs + RBI (+141)

If the Padres do get to Javier for some runs, Tatis will likely be right in the middle of the action. Tatis has had good contact metrics all season, and his production is starting to match up with his advanced numbers. On the year, he’s averaging 2.1 HRR (hits, runs and RBI) per game and hitting .281 with a .333 wOBA and 52.5% hard-hit rate.

After not homering for the first 55 games of the season, Tatis has reached double-digit homers for the season after going yard in two of his last four games. He can get this player prop all at once with a long ball on Sunday night, or he can find a different path to success with multiple hits, runs or RBIs.

Over his last 11 games, he’s averaging 2.5 HRR per game, and he has gone over this player prop in four of his last five games. Tatis is hitting .319 with a .361 wOBA at home this year, and he’s 1-for-4 with a homer in his career against Javier. Jose Altuve 2+ Total Bases (+138)

On the Astros’ side, Altuve is heating up and is a nice player prop to attack as he faces Padres righty starter Randy Vasquez. Altuve is only hitting .245 on the season with a .707 OPS, but he has been heating up lately and has turned back the clock over his last 10 games, going 15-for-40 (.375) with a double, a home run and a .401 wOBA.

He went 1-for-4 with a single and a strikeout in Saturday’s 3-2 loss, but he had at least two total bases in five straight games before that and in seven of his previous nine. His contact metrics are not nearly as high as they were in his prime, but the 36-year-old still has shown plenty of life in his bat lately.

Vasquez has been hittable at home with a 4.91 ERA at Petco Park this year, so taking Altuve to either get multiple hits or an extra-base hit makes sense in Sunday night’s contest.
