The Giants’ pitching and defense did their jobs on Sunday.

Unfortunately for San Francisco, the offense did not hold up its end of the bargain in a 3-1 loss in 10 innings to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday at Oracle Park.

Logan Webb was sensational in his start, allowing only one run and four hits in eight dominant innings of work.

The only damage he surrendered was in the sixth inning. Zach McKinstry and Kevin McGonigle both singled via seeing-eye grounders to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Webb then induced a 6-4-3 double play from the next batter, Gleyber Torres, but that allowed McKinstry to score from third for the game’s first run.

Earlier, the Giants had their own opportunity to score with runners on first and third and no outs in the fourth inning. After consecutive singles by Willy Adames and Rafael Devers, Osleivis Basabe struck out.

Then, Drew Gilbert hit a fly ball to right field, one that looked deep enough to score the runner from third. But McKinstry unleashed a strike to home plate in time to get Adames and keep the game scoreless at the time.

In the seventh, the Giants again had an opportunity with a runner on third and less than two outs. After beating out a would-be double play, Basabe stole second and advanced to third when the throw got past McGonigle.

This time, Gilbert got the job done, even if it wasn’t the prettiest way to do it. His weak chopper towards third base wasn’t fielded cleanly, and Colt Keith might not have had a chance to nab the speedy Basabe at home, anyways.

An inning later, San Francisco now had a golden chance to take a late lead. Two hits and a walk loaded the bases with one out for Devers, but he grounded into a double play that ended with a helmet slam as he ran through first base.

The Giants ended up going just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position on Sunday.

Both teams went three-up, three-down in the ninth, before the Tigers regained the lead in the 10th inning when pinch-hitter Hao-Yu Lee’s bloop single scored the automatic runner from second base. Lee came in to score two batters later on a fielder’s choice to give Detroit the all-important second run in extras.

This time, the Giants couldn’t respond, striking out in order in the bottom of the inning.

San Francisco now will welcome the Houston Astros to Oracle Park for a three-game series.
