The Philadelphia Phillies have had their share of ups and downs this season, but as they march toward October, they will be hopeful that the moves they made this summer to improve will help. 

As expected at the trade deadline, the Phillies were a very active team. This was a group that had multiple needs, and they did a nice job of addressing most of them. 

While Philadelphia didn’t add a starting pitcher as many expected, Andrew Painter has looked sharp since returning from the minors and has filled the need in the back end of the rotation so far. 

Due to the farm system of the Phillies not being regarded as the best, how they were able to attack the deadline was impressive, and while they parted ways with some young talent, they were able to keep arguably their top prospect in Gage Wood. 

While the young right-hander is regarded by many as the best prospect in the system, another player who is on the rise is catcher/first baseman Alirio Ferrebus.

Even though the system overall might have some flaws, there are some appealing prospects like Ferrebus to keep an eye on for Philadelphia. The 20-year-old is working his way through the system, and while a potential debut in the majors is still far off, there is reason to be optimistic about his game. 

So far, between both Single-A and A+, Ferrebus has slashed .310/.363/.493 with 11 home runs and 58 RBI in 77 games played. 

The offensive numbers are certainly impressive for the talented young prospect, but his versatility defensively is also extremely valuable. He has spent most of his time behind the plate this year, but he does have eight games at first base as well. 

When looking at where he could be most needed in a couple of years if he keeps developing, behind the plate would be the more pressing spot. J.T. Realmuto has not had a very good season, and while he is under contract for another couple of years, it could very well be Ferrebus who ends up replacing him. 

According to MLB Pipeline, he is now ranked as the sixth-best prospect in the system for Philadelphia. Furthermore, he is the highest-rated catcher in the system as well. 

Overall, while he is still very young, he has been very impressive this year and is going to be a player to keep an eye on in the minors.
