The Toronto Blue Jays’ catching depth took a hit on Wednesday afternoon.
Willie MacIver, who was designated for assignment on Monday to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Simeon Woods Richardson, was claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners.
MacIver was originally acquired by the Blue Jays on April 24 from the Texas Rangers in exchange for cash considerations. Instantly optioned to Triple-A Buffalo, MacIver appeared in 60 games with the Bisons this season and batted .270 with seven home runs and 44 RBIs.
The 29-year-old had reached base at a .344 clip with the Bisons and will be remembered for his performance on July 29 during a Bisons 5-4 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. During the win, MacIver slammed three home runs and drove in four runs in the victory.
For the season, between both the Bisons and Round Rock Express, MacIver is batting .253 with eight home runs and 50 RBIs.
MacIver’s brief experience at the MLB level came during the 2025 season while a member of the Athletics organization. In 33 games, MacIver batted .186 with three home runs and nine RBIs. Following the decision to designate Mitch Garver for assignment, the Mariners have been working with a tandem of Cal Raleigh and Jhonny Perada.
