Infielder Shay Whitcomb was claimed off waivers by the San Francisco Giants from the Houston Astros on Thursday, the teams announced.
The Astros designated Whitcomb for assignment on Monday in a corresponding move for adding outfielder Nelson Velázquez to their 40-man roster.
Whitcomb played in 57 major-league games for Houston over the last three seasons, compiling a .167/.216/.292 slash line in 102 plate appearances.
That included 17 major-league games this season over four different call-ups. Whitcomb had a .758 OPS and nine home runs in 73 games this year at Triple-A Sugar Land.
Drafted in the fifth round in 2020 by the Astros from UC San Diego, Whitcomb hit 35 home runs between Double- and Triple-A in 2023, tied for most in the minor leagues that season.
