Mt. Hood Community College names new baseball coach

Mt. Hood Community College has turned to a highly-experienced player with deep ties to the region as the next head coach of its baseball program.
Lucas Hunter will be the eighth coach in the 58-year history of the Saints program. He steps in for Korey Kier, who had led the team since 2022.
Hunter is a Portland native and Central Catholic High School graduate. He was selected by the Miami Marlins in the 31st round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft before continuing his collegiate career at the University of Portland.
He has been instrumental in growing the game across the region. Hunter currently serves as program manager with Friends of Baseball, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding opportunities and access for youth baseball and softball players across Oregon and Southwest Washington.
“Lucas brings tremendous energy, a strong understanding of player development, and a deep connection to the local baseball community,” said MHCC Athletic Director Dr. Kim Hyatt. “His vision for the program aligns with our commitment to student success, competitive excellence and meaningful engagement with our community.”
“We are excited to welcome him to Mt. Hood Community College and look forward to the future of Saints Baseball under his leadership,” she added.

Hunter hails from a baseball family. His father, Brian Hunter, played 12 years in the MLB and led the American League in stolen bases in 1997.
As a new era begins for the Saints, sports leadership thanked Coach Kier for his years leading the program. He was known for creating a culture of accountability, resilience and personal growth.
“The entire Saints community thanks Coach Kier for his years of service and wishes him and his family continued success,” MHCC wrote in a statement.
