GENEVA, Ill. — Art Warren earned his third save of the season for the independent Kane County Cougars (American Association) on Thursday in a 5-4 win over the Lincoln Saltdogs.
The Napoleon native pitched a scoreless inning in the victory on Thursday, allowing one hit but retiring four batters on 17 total pitches. The day earlier, Warren also pitched the eighth inning against Lincoln in a 10-5 defeat, allowing one unearned run along with two hits while striking out three.
On the year, the 33-year-old reliever is 2-0 with three saves and 11 holds in 32 total appearances with 54 strikeouts, 15 walks and a 1.65 ERA in 32.2 innings.
Newman singles in setback
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Archbold grad DJ Newman singled once in three at-bats for the Single-A Asheville Tourists on Wednesday in a 4-1 loss to the Rome Emperors.
Newman started in left field and batted ninth for Asheville, a Houston Astros’ affiliate. Newman struck out in the third inning and grounded out in the eighth frame, bookending a two-out single in the fifth inning.
On the season, the 22-year-old rookie is batting .298 in 42 games with 37 hits, 24 runs scored, 11 doubles, four home runs, 26 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.
