Tennessee baseball’s Blaine Brown underwent left elbow surgery on Monday after sustaining the injury while pitching this summer in the Cape Cod League, Volquest’s Mike Wilson first reported and a source confirmed to RTI.

Brown’s surgery was an internal brace procedure that takes pitchers anywhere from six to 10 months to recover from though Brown is not expected to miss that much time. The rising junior will miss the entirety of fall practice but Tennessee expects Brown’s bat back by the start of the 2027 season.

The two-way will not pitch during the 2027 season but it’s currently unclear whether the recovery will affect Brown’s ability to play in the field. Brown started the majority of his sophomore season starting in left field hough he also spent some time as Tennessee’s designated hitter.

Brown slashed .240/.308/.467 with 13 home runs, 12 doubles and 42 RBIs. It was an underwhelming season for the talented outfielder with the Rice transfer struggling at the plate for much of SEC play.

The left-handed hitter hit .233 with seven home runs, four doubles and 18 RBIs in conference play. His best weekend of the season came when he totaled six hits in three games against Texas.

Brown pitched sparingly during his sophomore season, posting a 3.00 ERA in just three innings pitched. While he was unable to carve out a consistent role on the mound last season, he did impress on the mound at the Cape Cod League this summer before suffering the arm injury.

Before the injury, Brown was in line to start in one outfield spot though it was not certain what spot he would play. The Vols added Wright State centerfielder Andrew Duncan out of transfer portal earlier this offseason while a number of other Tennessee players are capable of starting in left field. That group includes Levi Clark, Trent Grindlinger, Mercer transfer Braydon Kersey and Blake Grimmer.
