Jorge Polanco’s injury-plagued first season with the Mets has come to an end.

The veteran switch-hitter is set undergo surgery for left ankle bursitis in the “near-term,” interim manager Andy Green said Wednesday.

“He’s battled all year, this left ankle bursitis that he’s had — something that he didn’t deal with prior to this season,” Green said. “It’s gotten to the point where he just can’t get freedom from the pain.”

Polanco batted just .148 with two home runs and a .431 OPS in 37 games, mostly as the designated hitter.

A repeat MRI on Tuesday made it clear that Polanco, 33, would require surgery with an eye toward the 2027 season. Polanco is expected to be ready for a “baseball progression” by spring training, according to Green.

Green said it was his understanding Polanco’s surgery would not involve his Achilles tendon.

“I know he’s felt the burden of producing for the team, for the city, for the fans, and I know that’s been heavy for him at times,” Green said. “Just my observation from seeing him through the years, and watching him hit and watching him produce, I do think it has affected him mechanically.”

Polanco was an All-Star with the Minnesota Twins in 2019, and he hit 26 home runs with an .821 OPS for the Seattle Mariners last season.

The Mets signed Polanco to a two-year, $40 million contract in the winter, envisioning him as part of the solution to replace Pete Alonso at first base, a position he had hardly played.

But Polanco, a middle infielder by trade, made only two appearances at first base — in the first two games of the season — before his health took him out of the defensive mix.

Polanco was on the injured list from mid-April to early July — he also dealt with a right wrist contusion — and batted just .127 with a homer in 23 games after returning.

His absence will likely mean more at-bats for veteran utilityman Christopher Morel, whom the Mets called up from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday.

Morel, 27, signed a minor-league deal with the Mets in June after being released by the Miami Marlins. He entered Wednesday hitting .169 without a home run in 23 major-league games this season, including his Mets debut on Tuesday, when he went 1-for-3 with a walk.

But Morel batted .321 with 12 homers and a 1.098 OPS in 31 games with Triple-A Syracuse. He hit a career-high 26 home runs with the Chicago Cubs in 2023, when Green was the Cubs’ bench coach.

“I saw him be about as electric as any hitter in the game for a period of time,” Green said this week. “He’s gone through a couple of years where it hasn’t been that way, but it is very much in him. It’s ridiculous power. It’s elite athleticism. I think we’re taking a shot to see if he can recapture and rekindle some of that.”
