The utility of the on-field interview during MLB games is questionable at best.
First and foremost, these are professional athletes who are attempting to perform at the highest level while also bantering with whoever is on play-by-play. Beyond that obvious hiccup, conversations can be stilted and awkward, with the wind and weather making communication between the booth and the players on the field staggered. Further, sometimes the team at the plate has a rally inning, and the interview winds up going painfully long as the player being interviewed is helpless to get back to the dugout.
But for all of those issues, sometimes the on-field interview has its moments. Such was the case on Sunday night, when Brewers center fielder Garrett Mitchell was interviewed by ESPN during the Little League Classic. As the inning came to a close and the booth went to sign off from the interview, Mitchell interjected with words of appreciation for ESPN’s Karl Ravech, who was callin his final MLB game for ESPN.
“Hey Karl, I want to say one thing to you real quick,” Mitchell said as he jogged off the field. “I appreciate all that you’ve done. I know this is your last broadcast. I appreciate everything you’ve done for this game. I’ve been listening to you for a long time, and it’s a pleasure to share this last one with you.”
Wow. What a wonderful close to the live inning conversation with @Brewers Garrett Mitchell thanking @karlravechespn for @LittleLeague Classic game in Williamsport. pic.twitter.com/bpXAByTqvq

Ravech was one of the more shocking names to be laid off in ESPN’s most recent round of cuts. A veteran of the network for more than three decades, Ravech was at the heart of ESPN’s baseball coverage. After his unceremonious firing, he was surprisingly back on the air for a few more games with the network, working the final games of his contract.
Fans expressed their gratitude for Ravech, and for Mitchell for taking a moment to honor the longtime commentator.
Garrett Mitchell is the real deal. After a LONG inning of being mic’d… he interrupts Karl Ravech to thank him for all he’s done for the game of baseball. ESPN let him Go and This is his last event at the Little League World Series.

Pretty classy gesture by Garrett Mitchell to thank Karl Ravech while running off the mound during what appears to be Ravech’s final ESPN broadcast.

Mitchell’s gesture was indicative of the respect that the entire baseball world has for Ravech and his career. While ESPN may have made his exit from the network messier than it should have been, Mitchell’s appreciation was a fitting acknowledgement of what he has meant to the sport.
