The Waterville Indians saw their season come to a close this past weekend, falling to Hanska Lakers 13-3 in the first round of the Class C State Tournament in Shakopee.
Hanska, one of the favorites of the tournament, took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning to open up the game. The Indians were able to respond with a three run inning in the top of the second behind hits from Tom Gannon and Josh Cook to tie the game.
The two teams were held mostly in check the next few innings before Hanska picked up two more runs to a take a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth. For the most part the Indians were limited on offense the rest of the afternoon, watching the deficit grow from 5-3 to 8-3 in the seventh inning and then 13-3 in the bottom of the eight to close out the game with the Lakers ahead by 10.
Dallas McBroom led the way on the mound for the Indians through 5.1 inning, striking out six in the effort. Dalton Grose and Brandon Olson each chipped in as well in relief for McBroom who gave up five earned runs over the course of his time in the game.
Waterville racked up eight hits on the day while Hanska recorded 11 hits and zero errors.
The Indians season comes to a close with yet another state tournament appearance. Waterville battled through injuries over the course of the season but managed to find its game in the section playoffs to once again qualify for the state postseason with a final record of 15-11-0.
