NEW YORK — Christian Walker collected three hits, including a two-run home run off Gerrit Cole, and Jeremy Peña added a solo shot as the Houston Astros defeated the New York Yankees 5-1 on Thursday night to secure a series victory at Yankee Stadium.
Houston won two of three games in the series and improved to 67-67, maintaining a one-game lead over the Texas Rangers atop the American League West.
Walker snapped an 0-for-11 slump with a second-inning single before delivering the game’s biggest hit in the sixth inning, launching a two-run homer to give the Astros a 3-0 advantage. He later doubled and scored in the eighth inning when the Yankees committed two errors on the same play.
Peña also had a strong night, scoring Houston’s first run on an RBI single by Isaac Paredes before adding a solo home run in the seventh inning to extend the Astros’ lead.
Hayden Wesneski earned the win for Houston, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six in five-plus innings against the organization that originally drafted him in 2019. Steven Okert, AJ Blubaugh and Josh Hader combined to finish the five-hitter, with Hader closing out the victory.
Cole suffered the loss for New York after allowing three runs on six hits over six innings. Ben Rice scored the Yankees’ lone run on a sacrifice fly by Cody Bellinger in the sixth.
The Yankees fell to 75-58 and missed an opportunity to gain ground in the AL East race, while Houston heads to a weekend series against the New York Mets riding the momentum of a key road series win
