AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Texas Department of Public Safety announced the appointment of Jason Bobo as the new Chief of the Texas Rangers Division, according to a Thursday press release.
The appointment was confirmed at a Public Safety Commission meeting held on Thursday. Bobo will be taking over for Chief Scotty Shiver, who is retiring after 31 years of service.
Chief Shiver was appointed to the position back in February 2024.
“Today, as we welcome our new Chief, we are not simply passing a title; we are passing the torch of a centuries-old legacy. I am confident that Jason Bobo will carry that legacy forward with the same integrity, dedication and courage that have defined this storied organization for generations,” Colonel Freeman F. Martin said.

DPS said Bobo began his career with the agency in 1999 as a highway patrol trooper until 2005. He would later join the Texas Rangers in 2010, where he served in “a variety of leadership and investigative capacities.”
As a result of Bobo’s promotion, Ranger Major Kip Westmoreland was promoted to assistant chief of the Texas Rangers.
