AN iconic Major League Baseball team suffered more embarrassment this week with an attendance disaster.

The Miami Marlins, who are last in the division with a 23-36 record, hosted the league-worst Colorado Rockies in South Florida.

The Rockies beat the Marlins 6-4 on their own turf

loanDepot Park in Miami, has a capacity of 37,000.

But according to the ballpark announcer, Monday’s game, won 6-4 by the Rockies, was watched by just 5,894 people.

That means just 16 per cent of the stadium was full.

However, a picture taken just before the first pitch of the night has gone viral online, with more than one millions views.

Fans could hardly believe how empty the stadium was, with a few stragglers dotted around.

One said: “Quite the turnout. How do those two franchises stay in business?”

A second wrote: ‘You couldn’t give the tickets away even if you wanted.”

“Nice ballpark though,” added David Samson, the former president of the team.

While another replied: “More people have seen this post than saw the game.”

To be fair, Miami-Dade County, where the Marlins play, was hit with some severe storms on Monday.

But the Marlins’ attendance has been a huge problem since LoanDepot Park opened in 2012.

The team has made the playoffs just twice since then, and is currently averaging the third-lowest attendance in the league at just 11,944 fans.

The Rockies, meanwhile, have had a historically bad start, losing 50 of their first 60 games.

They are the third-fastest team to 50 losses in the history of professional baseball.

But the Marlins lost to them for the second consecutive night on Tuesday.

Colorado go for a series sweep against the Marlins on Wednesday.
