ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Archbold’s DJ Newman tallied his third three-hit game at the High-A level for the Asheville Tourists on Tuesday in a 15-0 loss to the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
Newman, 22, started in left field and batted ninth for Asheville, a Houston Astros’ affiliate. The former Bluestreak standout laced base hits in the third, sixth and ninth innings in the setback. On the year, the 2025 draft pick is hitting .345 in 55 games across three minor league levels with 59 hits, 32 runs scored, 15 doubles, six homers, 37 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.
Williams continues streak
CRESTWOOD, Ill. — Archbold grad Jeron Williams hit a one-out home run in the first inning on Tuesday for the independent-league Lake Erie Crushers, continuing his hitting prowess in the Frontier League in a 5-2 win at the Windy City ThunderBolts.
Williams, 25, also drew a second-inning walk following his round-tripper as the right fielder extended his run of 15 contests with at least one hit out of 16 total games with Lake Erie. Of those 15, nine have been multi-hit games.
The former Houston Astros’ draft pick and prospect is hitting .406 in 16 games with the Crushers with 26 hits, 11 runs, two doubles, one home run, nine RBIs and four steals.
Warren fires scoreless ninth
GENEVA, Ill. — Napoleon’s Art Warren pitched another scoreless eighth inning as the setup man for the Kane County Cougars on Tuesday in a 5-2 victory over the Chicago Dogs.
The 33-year-old righty retired the side in the eighth on 11 pitches, striking out one in his 13th hold of the season.
In 39 appearances for the independent Cougars, Warren has tallied four saves, 13 holds, and a 2.52 ERA with 61 strikeouts and 21 innings in 39.1 innings pitched.
No-decision for Willeman
KINSTON, N.C. — Landon Willeman pitched 6.1 innings in his 20th start this season for the Evansville Otters in a 7-6 loss to the Down East Bird Dawgs on Tuesday.
Willeman, a 25-year-old right-hander, allowed six runs and scattered 10 hits with three strikeouts and three walks and left the game with Evansville trailing before the Otters tied the game at 6-6 in the eighth and fell in walk-off fashion in the ninth.
The former BGSU hurler is 3-7 this season for Evansville with 79 strikeouts, 45 walks and a 6.26 ERA in 96.1 innings.
