The Mets acted as a dream neighbor on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field.
With the Yankees attempting to chase down the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, some assistance from their crosstown rivals would likely be greatly appreciated. And Andy Green’s club delivered.
The Mets defeated the Rays 10-4 on Wednesday night to take the three-game series against the American League leaders.
The Amazin’s opened up the scoring in the top of the first when Jared Young singled in Bo Bichette and Carson Benge — who both technically scored on errors — before Marcus Semien doubled in Young to take an early 3-0 lead.
Young has been a bright spot for the Mets this season, sporting a .765 OPS entering the night.
Brett Baty also had a big evening at the plate and in the field. The left fielder cleared the bases with a double in the third inning, scoring AJ Ewing, Semien and Bichette to give his team a 6-1 lead. The 26-year-old made a series of strong defensive plays in the outfield as well.
However, the first-place Rays were always going to fight back.
Jonathan Aranda got the home team on the board with an RBI single that was charged to Justin Hagenman in the bottom of the third before they did real damage against Chris Deveinski in the fourth. Devenski allowed three runs on four hits, two coming off the bat of Richie Palacios, whose opposite-field homer brought the Rays within two and easy striking distance.
However, Nick Morabito put the exclamation point on a strong win as his first MLB-hit was a bases-clearing double in the top of the seventh to give the Mets a 9-4 lead that they didn’t look back from.
Morabito debuted in 2025, however, he was hitless in 12 at-bats. The streak ended during his first game back with the big league club this season on Wednesday night.
Juan Soto’s solo shot in the eighth put the finishing touches on the Amazin’s 10-4 win.
The Mets will have the day off on Thursday before heading back to Citi Field to take on the San Francisco Giants. Christian Scott is set to take the ball against Matt Wilkerson.
