CHICAGO – Trevor Megill on Thursday was named the National League’s reliever of the month for August – an award that means a little more to a player who’s done his best work at a time when so many others are wearing down due to the rigors of the regular season.
“It’s always nice,” said Megill, who becomes the first Brewers reliever to win the award since Devin Williams in July of 2023. “Although there’s a lot of hard work, a lot of good plays behind me. A lot of wins.
“August is kind of the dog days of every season. So, to stay locked in like that was a good sign.”
Megill, 32, didn’t allow an earned run while converting all eight of his save opportunities over 11 appearances in August while allowing just two hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. He finished with a WHIP of 0.42 and limited opponents to a collective .053 average.
Megill joins Francisco Cordero (March-April, 2007) and Josh Hader (March-April, 2022 and May, 2022) as the only relievers in franchise history to record a month with eight or more saves while allowing two or fewer hits.
“Trevor has been unbelievable,” said manager Pat Murphy. “He’s been magnificent and he’s trusted. Great, great member of that bullpen. He has his own way of doing it, but the way he loves the rest of the guys, it’s really cool.”
Going back even further, Megill han’t allowed an earned run in his last 14 appearances and is unscored upon in 28 of his last 30 outings with a 0.30 ERA over that span.
He’s also converted his last 17 save chances dating to June 16.
“Just trying to be there for the team,” Megill said after knocking the wood in his locker when he was reminded of the streak he’s been on of late. “Just trying to be there for the team and trying to get three outs. That’s just the job – be there and finish it off when the opportunity presents itself.”
